Do you have a passion for good meals, the health of young people, and leading colleagues in everyday life? We are looking for a Head Chef who wants to contribute to our goal: Every child and student should have good food in their stomach – every day.
Your responsibilities
Being a Head Chef with us means being a team leader without formal personnel responsibility. Your task is to lead and distribute the daily work in the kitchen together with a team of cooks and restaurant assistants. You work operationally in the kitchen while inspiring and leading the work group towards our common goal. As Head Chef, you have primary responsibility for the appearance, nutritional value, flavor, choice of ingredients, and that the menu planning meets the Restaurant Unit's quality standards and economic conditions.
An important part of the job is to get more children and students to eat in school and to eat correctly based on the needs of young people. The aim is for every student to have the best possible conditions to succeed in school or preschool.
You are a natural link between employees in the kitchen, guardians, school staff, and the Restaurant Unit's management. This means you recognize the importance of and are skilled in communication, both verbal and written.
In the role, you collaborate closely with your department manager, who has the formal personnel responsibility for the work group. In your assignment, you drive and identify improvement measures and involve the work group in this work to develop the operations towards goals.
Your qualifications
We are looking for you who have experience working as a cook, preferably in large-scale kitchens. You have a secondary or post-secondary education in a relevant area, such as cooking, food science, or pastry. You enjoy leading others and have a desire to develop operations with a strong focus on quality.
To succeed in the role, clear communication, initiative, and a supportive approach are required. You have the ability to coordinate your team, plan, and structure work efficiently to create security and achieve common goals. You adapt to changed circumstances and remain calm and accommodating in your actions. You care about providing the best possible service and are meticulous in delivering high-quality meals.
It is important that you can communicate fluently in Swedish, both verbally and in writing. The role involves collaboration with many different parties and creating written instructions and information. Work in the kitchen involves static load and heavy lifting of equipment, so you need to have good mobility and some strength, as well as take care of yourself physically. You should not have any allergies that could affect your ability to perform daily work in a kitchen environment.
What we offer
The Restaurant Unit is a department within the Children & Education Administration, where the mission is to create meals for children and students in municipal operations. Approximately 285 employees work in the unit, distributed across the administration's 81 preschools, 46 primary schools, and six upper secondary schools. The different workplaces of the Restaurant Unit can vary from a small kitchen with one employee to larger kitchens with several. Depending on the type of kitchen you work in, the tasks may vary.
Approximately 30,000 meals are prepared every day, always with a focus on Swedish ingredients, good taste, nutrition, and reduced climate impact. We want more children to eat in school and eat correctly to feel good and succeed in their learning.
With us, you work towards a clear goal: to promote good eating habits and a healthy lifestyle among children. Working hours are weekdays 07:00–15:30. You will have the opportunity for competence development, freedom under responsibility, and become part of a secure and inclusive workplace with engaged colleagues.
Here you become part of something bigger! With warmth and respect, we show initiative in the big and the small. We live our values in our meeting with each other and those we serve. Every day, all year round, we ensure that Västerås functions. Together with your approx. 11,500 colleagues around the city, you have Sweden's most important job.
