Designing is one thing. Designing the mechanics in vehicles that protect our democracy and save lives is another.

We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Designer to join the Vetronics Variant Integration Dept. at BAE Systems Hägglunds in Örnsköldsvik.

Here, the electronics, wiring, and communication systems are integrated into the CV90 and BvS10, two of Europe's most in-demand combat vehicles today.

What you will actually do

You will design in CATIA V5: enclosures for electronics, mounts for radio and communication equipment, cable routing, and integration of customer systems into the vehicle. This involves mechanics that must withstand vibrations, temperature ranges, EMC requirements, and field conditions where a loose screw can become a problem far from home.

You follow your designs from the first sketch to serial production delivery. Since the development workshop is just a couple of minutes away, you can prototype, test, and adjust without waiting for the next weekly meeting. When the product goes into series production, you stand alongside the assemblers to see what actually happens when it goes from drawing to reality. Few design roles have such a short path between decision and consequence.

You also have contact with suppliers and customers. As a senior, you are often the one handling the more complex interfaces.

The team you will become part of

At our Vetronics Variant Integration Dept., we have a good mix of ages and a social group that organizes activities outside of work together with adjacent departments.

As a senior, you are often the person junior colleagues turn to when tricky problems need solving. This is part of the role, and one of the most rewarding aspects.

Who you are

You are a Master of Science or Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Design, or equivalent, and have at least eight years of experience designing complete mechanical systems. Preferably from the automotive industry, defense, or other heavy machinery sectors, industries where products must endure more than just looking good on a drawing board.

You are familiar with CATIA V5 or comparable tools, and you do not need to look up the basics of tolerance setting, material selection, or PLM workflows.

You prefer to help the team move forward rather than marking territory. You take responsibility for your designs all the way through, even when it involves uncomfortable conversations with suppliers or another round on the prototype.

Living in Örnsköldsvik

Most of us commute in about 15 minutes. Many have ski tracks or slopes within a few minutes' reach, as well as the boat in the harbor. The High Coast is just across the city border, and whatever the season, there is always something to do outdoors.

Housing prices are a fraction of those in big cities, the municipality is active towards newcomers, and the city often ranks high on lists of safe places for families with children. Several of our employees moved here for the job and stayed for everything else.
