Uppsala Cathedral is looking for two supervising cathedral chaplains: one with a focus on cultural heritage, learning, and tourism, and one with a focus on worship and music.

Uppsala Pastorate

The Church of Sweden Uppsala consists of six urban parishes working in collaboration and is also responsible for Uppsala's churchyards. Five of these parishes formed the Uppsala Pastorate in 2014 with a shared board and leadership. Together, we aim to be the local church for 180,000 residents of Uppsala.

Uppsala Cathedral

Uppsala Cathedral serves as a place where the parish, the diocese, and the entire nation find common ground, and is sometimes referred to as the national sanctuary. It hosts a vibrant activity life with services, concerts, and a variety of events. As the largest cathedral in the Nordic countries, Uppsala Cathedral welcomes approximately 700,000 visitors annually.

About the Positions

Focus: Cultural Heritage, Learning, and Tourism

For the focus on cultural heritage, learning, and tourism, we are looking for you with a genuine interest in history and cultural heritage. You will supervise staff for visitor services, church pedagogy, the shop, café, and conservation ateliers for textiles and stained glass. To succeed in this role, you must understand the economic aspects of operations that need to be self-sustaining while functioning alongside a vibrant parish life. You should view Uppsala Cathedral as a steward of a shared and protected cultural heritage. Inventory management is also part of your role.

Focus: Worship and Music

For the focus on worship and music, we are looking for you as a skilled liturgist and preacher with a strong interest and broad knowledge of the Church of Sweden's music and worship life. You will supervise staff for cathedral music, the maintenance department, and two chaplains. You need to understand the complexity of a high-level, high-volume operation and have a holistic view with the ability to coordinate the different parts.

Common to Both Positions

We are looking for team players who are attentive and courageous, with a desire to give everyone the opportunity to see, experience, and engage with Uppsala Cathedral. You wish to exercise clear and non-hierarchical leadership and have the ability to help your employees grow and thrive. You collaborate easily with people inside and outside the Church of Sweden and the pastorate. You are self-assured and look forward to collaborating with the other supervising chaplain and the entire work team. Furthermore, you are administratively strong and forward-thinking in your planning.

Duties include, among other things:

• Standard clerical duties, including officiating at small and large services.
• Performing church rites both at Uppsala Cathedral and in the district churches of the Uppsala Cathedral Parish.
• Contributing to the development of Uppsala Cathedral as a tourist destination.
• Responsible for contact and planning of special events and conferences.
• Member of the Cathedral's leadership group, with the Cathedral Chaplain as your direct supervisor.

Qualifications

• Ordained as a priest according to the Church of Sweden's order.
• Personal suitability will be given great weight.

Information about the Position

Both positions are permanent full-time employment with a start date of January 1, 2027, or as agreed upon. Interviews will be conducted during week 34.
