The Department of Military Studies conducts research and education in the field of military science. The department consists of approximately 160 employees and has around 1,000 students and participants in commissioned training. The department offers education at all levels within the framework of four programs: the Officer Program (basic level), the Higher Officer Program (advanced level), the Master's Program in War and Defence (advanced level), and doctoral education in Military Science (doctoral level). In addition, commissioned training is conducted within a number of independent courses at the basic and advanced levels.

Military Science is a social science, and its central object of study is war and the exercise of military power. The subject encompasses research on how military capability is created, led, organized, maintained over time, and brought into effect in operations, during war, conflict, and crises. Military Science also includes broader societal and ethical aspects as well as critical perspectives in relation to war and warfare. The subject has both a general knowledge-developing dimension and a practice-oriented dimension linked to the education of primarily officers. The subject is found only at the Swedish Defence University in Sweden.
