The Department of Romance and Classical Studies belongs to the humanities area and the Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm University. The department covers the main areas of Romance languages, Classical languages, and Latin American studies.

Subject/Description
Academic education in Romance languages has been offered in Stockholm since the late 1920s. After nearly ten years, the first professorship in Romance languages was established in 1937. The undergraduate education at the Romance Department was divided into four languages in the 1960s: French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. This remains the case today: the subject of Portuguese is part of the Department of Romance and Classical Studies, where, alongside the aforementioned Romance languages, education and research in Greek, Latin, and Latin American studies are also included. The department constitutes a dynamic research and educational environment and currently has around 70 employees.
Approximately 200 students study Portuguese at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels each academic year. Teaching and research in Portuguese are oriented towards the Portuguese-speaking world in a broad sense. Central research areas within all Romance languages are literature and linguistics.
Job Responsibilities
The duties consist of teaching at the undergraduate level in the sub-courses Text and Language Structure I (Portuguese I), Portuguese in the World (Portuguese I), and Mediation (Portuguese III). Teaching also includes course responsibility, course administration, and examination. The teaching is conducted online.
Qualifications
Eligible for appointment as an Assistant Professor in Portuguese is someone who has completed a relevant higher education degree in Portuguese at an advanced level, or has equivalent competence, and possesses pedagogical skill.
The applicant must have demonstrated pedagogical skill through teaching Portuguese as a foreign language at the university level.
As a general qualification requirement, one must have both the ability to collaborate and the other abilities and suitability needed to perform the duties well.
As a specific qualification requirement, the applicant must have documented very good proficiency in spoken and written Portuguese and very good proficiency in spoken and written English.
Evaluation Criteria
Emphasis is placed on pedagogical skill and academic merits. Administrative ability is also valued.
Special emphasis is placed on pedagogical skill. This skill must be well documented in a way that makes it possible to assess the quality of the pedagogical activities.
Great emphasis is also placed on knowledge of Portuguese and English.
In the event of otherwise equal merits, experience in second or foreign language teaching is distinguishing.
Meritorious is experience in distance education as well as university pedagogy education of at least 15 higher education credits or equivalent knowledge acquired in other ways.
About the Position
The position is for 35 percent and is fixed-term from August 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027. This vacancy is to cover a temporary need within teaching.
The employment form of Assistant Professor at Stockholm University does not offer promotion opportunities to higher-level academic positions.
