National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS) is recruiting a bioinformatics expert for a national team focused on image analysis of electron microscopy and multimodal 3D data, based at SciLifeLab Umeå
Job Description
Umeå University is seeking a Staff Scientist to work with advanced 3D image analysis of electron microscopy data, tomography, cryo-EM, SEM-generated image volumes, and correlation of image data for multimodal imaging. As a Staff Scientist, you will be part of a technical staff group working with national research infrastructure at the Umeå Centre for Electron Microscopy (UCEM) and will work integrated within SciLifeLab's Bioinformatics Platform (National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden: www.nbis.se). This is a national platform with over 120 bioinformatics experts who together provide unique bioinformatics support and education for research across the entire life science spectrum, as well as participating in international collaborations. Within NBIS, you will belong to the BioImage Informatics group (https://www.scilifelab.se/units/bioimage-informatics/ (https://www.scilifelab.se/units/bioimage-informatics/)). The position is funded by grants from NBIS via SciLifeLab and the Wallenberg Data Driven Life Science programme (DDLS), https://www.scilifelab.se/data-driven/ (https://www.scilifelab.se/data-driven/).
Responsibilities
As a Staff Scientist, you will provide expert advice to researchers in the planning and analysis of electron microscopy (EM) and multimodal data across the entire life science research field, such as biology, biochemistry, and medical projects. You will assist researchers in EM projects with image analysis and participate in teaching method courses at the doctoral level. Project support is prioritized at the national level. You will perform project support and service tasks for researchers individually and plan your work together with the NBIS BioImage Informatics team. Responsibilities include team and user meetings both locally and nationally, data analysis individually and in collaborations, and writing and preparing presentations, protocols, and scientific reports. In this role, it is important to stay updated on the development of EM and image analysis software, test and implement new methods, and communicate with both programmers and infrastructure users regarding developments in the field of image analysis. You will assist with software installations, method development, and maintenance of digital tools and workflows. You will also coordinate ongoing projects at the local research infrastructure and facilitate collaborations between multiple infrastructure nodes in Sweden and internationally. Your workplace will be at UCEM in Umeå. Our working language is English.
Qualifications
We are looking for you with a PhD in cell and structural biology, biochemistry, bioimaging, biotechnology, computer science, or equivalent. You have experience in the use and development of advanced image analysis for electron microscopy (EM) and correlative imaging. Experience and background knowledge of sample preparation and instrument handling within EM (SEM, TEM, Cryo-EM) for life science research projects are necessary to understand and apply the methods. Extensive (3+ years) experience in using and/or developing advanced digital image analysis methods is required, as well as documented experience in tomographic 3D reconstruction and using multiple different software packages for 3D image analysis, segmentation, and visualization. Additionally, very good collaboration and communication skills in English are required.
For this position, you must be independent and flexible to take on new challenges, establish new methods, and contribute to several different projects in parallel. You are a person who can take initiative, be creative, and have a service-oriented attitude, with a willingness to help users and research groups with bioinformatics projects to achieve new results.
Other Desirable Qualifications
Relevant postdoc projects or equivalent experience are meritorious but not required. Experience with different types of microscopy, such as sample preparation and instrument handling, is meritorious. "Reproducible research" and "FAIR data" are central concepts for us, and expertise in programming reproducible code using various platforms, version control, coding languages, and container solutions is meritorious. Experience in training machine learning models on HPC systems is also meritorious. A well-established international network within EM, and previous international collaborations within or with research infrastructure, are highly valued.
Application
The application should include a cover letter explaining why you are applying for the position, a CV, a PhD certificate, and relevant certificates and grades.
The application must be submitted via our e-recruitment system Varbi no later than June 15, 2026.
Terms
The position is full-time for 12 months. Start date by agreement.
