Description

The Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) is seeking a researcher with a strong interest in scientific studies of space weather effects, as well as in the development of IRF's space weather products in collaboration with both Swedish authorities and international partners.

Responsibilities

Space weather affects technology and humans through physical processes originating in the Sun and its interaction with Earth's magnetosphere and ionosphere. The technological impacts are well-known and include effects on satellites, communication, navigation, and power distribution.

The research position is part of IRF's program Solar, Space, and Atmospheric Research (STAR), which includes researchers, engineers, and developers from IRF's various offices. You will become part of a dynamic group studying space weather and ionospheric physics, meteors and space objects, as well as atmospheric dynamics and Arctic high-altitude clouds. IRF is a member of the International Space Environment Service and is responsible for the Regional Warning Centre Sweden. IRF also participates in ESA's space safety program.

You are expected to formulate relevant research questions and conduct scientific studies related to, for example, geomagnetic storms and the effects of space weather on radio communication, both independently and in close collaboration with researchers at IRF's various offices, as well as with Swedish authorities and other stakeholders. You are also expected to actively lead and contribute to technical investigations and the development of operational space weather products. The role includes applying for external research funding. The work involves international collaborations within established networks as well as the development of new research partnerships.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with a PhD in space physics (or a closely related field deemed equivalent by the employer), along with relevant knowledge and experience in research and model development within space weather. Experience in operational space weather activities or space weather services is particularly advantageous. Since the work involves close collaboration with both national authorities and international actors, proficiency in both spoken and written English and Swedish is required. You possess strong collaborative skills, and personal suitability will be given significant weight. The position may be subject to a security clearance.

Conditions

The position is a fixed-term extension located at IRF's office in Lund. IRF applies individual salary setting. Start date in September 2026 or as agreed.
