We are now looking for an experienced consultant in spine surgery who wishes to take a leading role in the development of future spine care at Linköping University Hospital. The position also includes responsibility as section leader with the opportunity to develop the operations long-term.
We wish to hire you with the possibility to be a knowledge holder and driver within advanced spine surgery at Linköping University Hospital. You will have an important role in shaping the future of spine surgery within the South East Sweden Healthcare Region.
At our hospital, you will work in a highly specialized university healthcare setting with strong collegiality and good opportunities for development.

The Orthopaedic Clinic at Linköping University Hospital is a large and well-established operation with approximately 150 employees. The clinic includes a care ward with a teaching ward, outpatient clinic, and rehabilitation unit, providing both emergency and planned orthopaedic care. We encourage you to read about our career ladder for physicians and also about your benefits with us.
Job Description
As a consultant in the spine section, you will work in both outpatient and ward activities with a focus on advanced spine surgery. The work is cross-professional and team-based, with close collaboration with other specialties and regular multidisciplinary conferences.
Duty work is included in the position. The clinic staffs intermediate duty, orthopaedic back-up duty, and a separate spine back-up duty line 24/7 as support for healthcare providers throughout the South East Sweden Healthcare Region.
The spine section is responsible for thoracic and lumbar spine surgery, while the neurosurgical clinic handles cervical spines. Education and research are a natural part of the work, and there are good opportunities to combine clinical duties with research, education, and academic development.
As section leader in spine surgery, you have a central role in developing and strengthening the operations long-term. The assignment involves medical leadership for the spine operations and strategic development work in close collaboration with the operations manager, colleagues, and other professions.
The role includes, among other things, developing care processes and treatment methods, being responsible for care programs and patient flows, contributing to research and education, and coordinating collaborations within and outside the clinic. You also have an important role in supervision and competence development within the section. Time is allocated for administration, development work, and management tasks.
As a university healthcare unit, we prioritize research, with active research in almost all our profile areas. There is an opportunity for doctoral education with supervision at the clinic, as well as the possibility to continue researching if you are already a PhD.
Work Group
The spine section's medical group is undergoing a generation shift, where several senior colleagues work part-time or are approaching retirement, while younger colleagues with a focus on spine surgery are being built up.
This creates good opportunities for you as a consultant and section leader to take a clear and long-term role in the operations – clinically, strategically, and as a mentor and knowledge resource.
About You
As a person, you are sensitive, clear in your communication, and have an easy time collaborating. You are happy to share your knowledge and actively contribute to a good working climate. You have a positive attitude, see opportunities in change, and take responsibility for your work with engagement and a holistic perspective.
You have an interest in education and research and are happy to function as support and a knowledge resource for colleagues and other professions. The assignment includes participation in the clinic's spine back-up duty line and some administrative activities. You may also hold trust positions and work actively within research and education.
The work involves continuous dialogue with patients, relatives, colleagues, and other operations, which is why very good knowledge of the Swedish language, both spoken and written, is a requirement.
Application and Employment
The application should contain a fully completed merit summary for physicians, which you can find here (#). This must be verified. Do not forget to also attach a copy of your degree certificate or license.
Before employment in a patient-facing role within Region Östergötland, you will be asked to fill out a health declaration.
We warmly welcome your application! If you need help registering in the system, contact customer service Support and Service, 010-103 60 00, during office hours.
