Sustainable bioproduction of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP).

Subject Description

The subject covers the production of biological medicines with a special focus on advanced therapies such as cell and gene therapies. The focus is on addressing manufacturing bottlenecks that currently hinder access and large-scale application of such therapies, which in turn will facilitate new and broader clinical applications of these biological medicines. Addressing these challenges requires innovative sustainable solutions within bioprocesses, as well as interdisciplinary approaches, including real-time monitoring and control, data-driven and mechanistic modeling, automation, and/or omics-based characterization.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Professor is expected to establish and lead an independent research group in Sustainable Bioproduction of ATMPs that can complement and collaborate with existing research groups at the School of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health (CBH) at KTH. The Assistant Professor is expected to leverage the rapid development in the field and help KTH realize the potential and further develop the area for KTH, Sweden, and the EU. This includes initiating new research projects, obtaining research grants, teaching, establishing collaborations, educating and supervising students and early-career researchers at the master's, PhD, and postdoc levels, managing the group's economy, and maintaining a safe, stimulating, and healthy work environment.

The Assistant Professor will be given the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and gain merits that may qualify them for another teaching position with higher requirement for qualifications (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Higher Education Ordinance). The Assistant Professor may apply for promotion to Associate Professor in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12 c of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Qualifications

Eligible for appointment as an Assistant Professor is someone who has completed a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence. Preference should be given to those who have completed a doctoral degree or reached equivalent competence no more than seven years prior to the time of application for the position of Assistant Professor. However, those who have completed a doctoral degree or reached equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria for appointment as an Assistant Professor at KTH are those specified in Section 1.3 of KTH's Employment Regulations in relation to the established employment profile.

It is of highest importance that the applicant has demonstrated

• potential for tenure for a higher teaching position. This includes potential for independent development as a researcher and teacher within the current subject area, as well as the ability to establish, renew, and develop the current research area.
• scientific skill demonstrated through scientific publication, conference participation, participation in research collaborations, and other commitments in the scientific community such as reviewing or expert assignments.

It is of next highest importance that the applicant has demonstrated

• interest in and insight into pedagogical development within the current subject area.

It is also of importance that the applicant has demonstrated

• experience of a postdoctoral stay in a research environment other than the university where the applicant defended their thesis. Experience from research and development work in industry or other organizations can be assessed as equivalent to a traditional postdoctoral stay at another university.
• interest in and insight into leadership in academia, collaboration with the surrounding society, and awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality.
• administrative skill.

Special Assessment Criteria for Promotion to Associate Professor

When assessing applications for promotion to Associate Professor, provisions according to 1.2.4 in KTH's Employment Regulations will apply. Ability to teach in Swedish is a merit that is given great weight when applying for promotion.

Fixed-term until: The employment is permanent, but for a maximum of six years, and can be renewed if, due to the teacher's sick leave, parental leave, or other special reasons, additional time is required to achieve the purpose of the employment. However, the total employment period may not exceed eight years. The employment is part of the Tenure Track system at KTH, and the Assistant Professor will be assessed for promotion to Associate Professor after application.
