Project Description

The position is linked to a research project focusing on the sustainable conversion of carbon dioxide into solid carbon materials using electrochemical and catalytic methods. The project aims to develop catalytic systems and electrochemical processes for carbon formation, investigate reaction mechanisms, and improve efficiency towards scalable carbon-negative technologies.

The research combines fundamental electrochemical studies with application-oriented technology development towards experimental systems with potential for practical implementation and scaling, including exploration of unconventional catalytic systems such as liquid metal interfaces.

Job Responsibilities

The position involves experimental research in electrochemical CO2 conversion and development of carbon materials. The researcher is expected to:

  • Design and operate electrochemical systems for catalytic conversion reactions involving gaseous reactants.
  • Perform electrochemical measurements such as cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and controlled potential electrolysis, including evaluation of electrocatalytic performance, stability, and efficiency.
  • Synthesize and modify catalytic and carbon-based materials.
  • Prepare catalysts and electrodes on conductive substrates (e.g., metallic substrates or carbon supports) and evaluate electrocatalytic performance.
  • Characterize materials using techniques such as XRD, SEM/EDS, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, BET analysis, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and related methods.
  • Contribute to the development of experimental systems with potential for scaling and practical implementation.
  • Contribute to scientific publications and project reporting.
  • Participate in the research group's activities and collaborations.

Supervisory tasks may be included depending on qualifications.

Eligibility Requirements

A researcher is primarily employed for research and must have obtained a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree assessed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree.

Assessment Criteria

In the appointment process, special emphasis will be placed on scientific competence.

The qualifications that will be considered in the assessment are:

  • Doctoral degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, electrochemistry, or a related field.
  • Documented practical experience in experimental electrochemistry and electrocatalysis for chemical conversion reactions, including catalyst preparation, electrode fabrication on conductive substrates (e.g., metallic substrates or carbon supports), construction of electrochemical cells, and electrochemical testing (e.g., CV, LSV, EIS, chronoamperometry), as well as analysis and interpretation of electrochemical data.
  • Documented strong practical experience working with carbon-related materials in electrocatalytic conversion systems (e.g., gas-involving reactions such as CO2 reduction, water splitting, or related catalytic processes), including material synthesis, electrode preparation, controlled electrolysis experiments, and evaluation of electrocatalytic performance.
  • Practical experience with several material characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM/EDS, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, and BET analysis.
  • Documented ability to independently design, troubleshoot, and conduct laboratory experiments.
  • A strong scientific publication record relevant to the research area.
  • Good communication skills in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary research environment.

The following qualifications are meritorious:

  • Experience with CO2 adsorption, carbon dioxide capture materials, or gas-solid interaction studies.
  • Experience with reactor design or development of experimental systems.
  • Experience working with liquid metal systems or dynamic catalytic interfaces.
  • Experience in application-oriented research, technology development, or experimental systems with potential for practical implementation.
