Postdoctoral Researcher in Economics

Luleå University of Technology is experiencing strong growth with world-leading expertise in several research areas. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national, and regional companies, public actors, and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has an annual turnover of over 2.3 billion SEK. We have more than 1,800 employees and nearly 21,600 students.

The Department of Economics is part of the Department of Social Sciences, which, in addition to economics, also includes subjects such as law, political science, and history. Within the department, research focuses on various social science aspects of the environment and natural resource area. The department conducts both disciplinary and interdisciplinary projects where researchers from economics collaborate with researchers from other subjects within the department.

Subject Description

Economics analyzes questions regarding how society is organized to manage limited resources. The research is focused on natural resource, energy, and environmental economics. It applies microeconomic theories to analyze the functioning of energy and commodity markets and how these are affected by various political decisions and instruments.

Project Description

The Economics unit at Luleå University of Technology is in an expansive phase and therefore needs to recruit a postdoctoral researcher to work on a research project concerning risk-sharing in public investments related to the green transition. The project builds on research regarding public trade-offs concerning green transition and investments related to it, as well as research on both organized and informal risk-sharing between different political decision-making levels. The aim of the project is both to conduct theoretical and empirical research on risk-sharing in public investments related to the green transition and to develop proposals for how such risk-sharing models could concretely function for the public investments planned in the coming years in Norrland. The focus in 2026 will be on research about risk-sharing between different public actors, while future work may also involve research on risk-sharing between public and private actors. The research is funded within the framework of a collaboration project between Luleå University of Technology, Region Norrbotten, Region Västernorrland, and the County Administrative Board of Norrbotten County.

Job Responsibilities

You will work in the aforementioned research project and be involved in the project's planning and implementation together with other members of the project group and partners. Work in the project will comprise 80% of your working time. Teaching and course development at both basic and advanced levels in economics will be included in the job responsibilities with 20% of the working time. You are also expected to participate in the collegial work within the subject and department and engage in efforts to seek external research funding.

Qualifications

To be eligible for employment, a PhD or equivalent foreign degree in economics is required. It is advantageous if your degree was obtained no more than three years before the application deadline for this position. If there are special reasons, those who obtained their PhD earlier may also be considered, for example, due to various types of statutory leave.

Since the empirical part of the project concerns public investments at the municipal and regional level in Norrland and involves collaboration with local partners, good knowledge of the Swedish language and knowledge of the Swedish political system are necessary. The implementation of the project also requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. As the project will involve connections between the green transition and public risk-sharing, previous experience in research or other work related to one or both of these areas is strongly meritorious. Other assessment criteria are, in order of priority:

  • Documented experience in conducting applied research in environmental and natural resource economics.
  • Excellent ability to take initiative and work in interdisciplinary environments.
  • Pedagogical skills, such as university courses in pedagogy and experience from higher education are meritorious.
  • Good knowledge of English.
