Job Advertisement: Developer of Military Command Systems

The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defence and security to support Sweden's military and civil defence. The research spans several areas, such as underwater, cyber defence, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defence, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive substances), military platforms including weapons and protection, as well as security policy analysis. FOI's research plays a key role in building Sweden's defence capability.

Do you want to work in a creative, interdisciplinary environment where research meets practical application? Then FOI could be your new workplace! There is now an opportunity for you to engage in an exciting operation at the forefront of research in defence and security. FOI is looking for someone who wants to work with the development and evaluation of military command systems.

About the Position

You will work both practically and theoretically on the development of command capabilities within the defence area. The development of command systems aims to strengthen decision-making and coordination within the defence and security sector. The military command system encompasses methods, technology, organization, competence, and doctrine. The work involves designing and applying approaches, methods, and techniques to develop and evaluate command systems.

The position entails continuous knowledge development within the command area as well as analysis and application of this knowledge. You will present results both in writing and orally, in Swedish and English, to a broad audience within the Armed Forces, other authorities, and international partners. The work is carried out in close collaboration with colleagues but also places high demands on independence.

The assignments will mainly come from the Armed Forces, the Defence Materiel Administration, and EU institutions. The tasks may involve travel within Sweden and, in some cases, abroad, for example, for field studies, meetings with clients and partners, as well as participation in international conferences.

About the Unit

You will be part of the unit Sociotechnical Systems, which belongs to Cyber Defence and Command Technology in Linköping. The unit focuses on the interplay between humans, technology, and organization, as well as how modern technology can enhance efficiency within Total Defence.

The work is conducted in project form and is based on methods such as literature studies, experiments, field and case studies, and action research. The work is applied and involves developing, testing, and evaluating concepts and prototypes in close collaboration with end-users in operational environments. The assignments are often future-oriented and require an exploratory and iterative approach, for example, through workshops for needs analysis and testing new solutions. At FOI, high academic quality is combined with clear practical relevance.
