Summer Job for Meteorology Students at SMHI

SMHI is a government agency under the Ministry of Climate and Enterprise with a mission to be experts in meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, and climatology. This means we manage and develop information about weather, water, and climate for the benefit of the public, society's functions, and the business sector. We collaborate daily with other authorities and organizations, both in Sweden and internationally.

The Observations Unit

The observations unit is responsible for the management and development of our observation networks. This includes monitoring and maintaining station networks, inspecting meteorological, hydrological, and sea level stations, digitizing, reviewing, and storing observation data; flow measurements, and monitoring the oceans around Sweden through sampling and measurements from vessels, with buoys and other fixed measuring systems deployed in the sea.

About the Position

In a summer job at our observations unit, you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge in practice while gaining insight into how our operations work.

The work will be of an administrative nature but may also involve study visits to other units and field trips.

The tasks broadly include the following:

• Quality work on historical observation data
• Updating station information
• Visualizing gaps in the station network using WMO requirements
• Structuring information about various agreements
• Scanning/copying records in preparation for digitization

About You

We are looking for someone who is a meteorology student, preferably nearing the end of your studies. You need to be able to speak and write in Swedish, as well as read in English. Since the work is of an administrative nature, you should be comfortable working in various IT systems.

You will largely manage your work independently in close dialogue with a supervisor, which means you need to have a good ability to structure and drive your own work carefully. External contacts with SMHI may occur, requiring good communication and collaboration skills with both external and internal parties.

If you have knowledge of GIS, it is an advantage, but not a requirement.
