The research group led by Antonio Lentini is seeking a PhD candidate in medical science focused on developing tools to understand tumor evolution.

Your responsibilities

Cancer is constantly changing, where subclones often acquire new mutations that drive tumor growth and treatment resistance. In this project, you will use large-scale single-cell techniques to identify clonal and mutational patterns that can explain tumor evolution. By integrating data from primary patient samples and experimental models, you will work to predict evolutionary paths and identify new treatment opportunities. This aims to improve treatment responses and long-term patient outcomes in cancer. You will have the opportunity to learn and develop new workflows in computational biology and advanced single-cell genomics and contribute to advancements in precision medicine in oncology.

We are looking for a highly motivated person

We are looking for a highly motivated person with a passion for driving research development forward. The ideal candidate has a solid background in data analysis, excellent problem-solving skills, and thrives in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment.

Your qualifications

You have a Master's degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, applied mathematics/physics, or completed courses totaling at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 must be at an advanced level in natural sciences, life sciences, or engineering. Alternatively, you have equivalent knowledge.

You should be proficient in both oral and written communication in English and possess good collaboration skills.

Documented experience with Unix command-line interface (CLI) and Bash scripting, as well as skills in another programming language such as Python or R for analysis and visualization of single-cell RNA sequencing and single-cell DNA sequencing, is required. Knowledge in statistics, AI/ML, mathematical modeling, and/or phylogenetics is highly meritorious.

Personal qualities such as creativity, curiosity, accuracy, and a structured approach to problem-solving are essential.

Your workplace

You will work in the Department of Cell and Neurobiology (CNB) at the Institute of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV). The department conducts research as well as undergraduate and doctoral education in medical science.

You will also be part of the SciLifeLab & Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), a 12-year initiative aimed at recruiting and training the next generation of data-driven life scientists and creating globally leading capabilities in computational and data science within life science in Sweden. Through this program, you will participate in the national DDLS graduate school and join a dynamic community of PhD candidates and postdocs from both academia and industry. You will also have access to extensive training and resources in computational science, including high-performance computing (HPC) clusters.

About the employment

Upon acceptance into the doctoral program, your employment as a PhD candidate will be processed. Read more about each faculty's doctoral education here.

The employment is time-limited to four years full-time. You will initially be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan.
