Research Engineer at the Total Defence Research Institute (FOI)

The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defense and security to support Sweden's military and civilian defense. The research spans several areas, including underwater, cyber defense, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defense, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive substances), military platforms including weapons and protection, as well as security policy analysis. FOI's research plays a key role in building Sweden's defense capability.

About the Position

As a research engineer, you will be an important part of our research group and will participate in research and development together with others in project form.

In the research projects, you will work with the latest technologies in areas such as image and signal processing, robotics, computer vision, and machine learning. You will contribute to the development of new algorithms and systems for various types of data for land, sea, air, and space applications.

Examples of Tasks:

  • Develop and implement algorithms
  • Design experiments and prototypes for validation of algorithms and systems
  • Analyze and evaluate results from experiments and simulations
  • Documentation and reporting of research results and publication in relevant scientific journals and conferences

About the Unit

You will be part of the Sensor Informatics area, which belongs to the Cyber Defense and Command Technology department. A central part of the research in this area consists of the development and evaluation of methods and algorithms for automatic analysis of sensor data from individual sensors, multi-sensor systems, and sensor networks. The goal is to facilitate the interpretation of information for users or various technical systems for monitoring and unmanned vehicles. Important types of sensors include radar, optical, acoustic, and 3D imaging sensors.

Do you have the competence profile we need?

Requirements

We are looking for someone with a master's degree in engineering physics, computer engineering, software engineering, or another field that FOI deems suitable. You may have recently graduated or have a few years of experience.

You have knowledge in some of the following areas:

  • Programming in Python, C++, MatLab
  • Machine learning with deep learning
  • Signal and image processing for sensor data
  • Autonomous vehicles
  • Control engineering and robotics
  • Sensor fusion
  • Neural networks

As a person, you need to be self-driven, proactive with problem-solving analytical skills, and have good collaboration abilities. We place great emphasis on your personal qualities. In addition to your technical/scientific knowledge and personal qualities, you need to have very good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written.

Meritorious

Previous experience from FOI, e.g., through work or thesis, is meritorious.

The position is a permanent employment that may begin with a six-month probationary period.
