Project Description
PhD Subject: Information and Communication Technology
Wireless communication technology has evolved through five generations, but the demand for higher efficiency, availability, and reliability never ends.
The physical layer of 5G and 6G networks revolves around MIMO technology with multiple antennas. 5G uses 64 antennas in each base station and 4 antennas in mobile devices, which can increase by 5-10 times in 6G. These antennas can be used for beamforming, spatial multiplexing, and integrated communication and sensing (ISAC).
In this PhD project, you will contribute to groundbreaking research in 6G MIMO technology and develop new communication theory and signal processing algorithms. The goal is to develop theories, algorithms, and network architecture concepts to deliver full coverage for network services worldwide. One hypothesis is that the solution will be based on next-generation cell-free MIMO technology, which unites ground-based distributed base stations and low Earth orbit satellites. Methods from MIMO communication theory, array signal processing, optimization, and machine learning are likely to play an important role. The research will primarily be theoretical, but KTH has testbeds for potential experiments. However, we are not looking for microwave engineers as no antennas or hardware will be built.
You will be part of the world-leading research group led by Professor Emil Björnson (IEEE Fellow, Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher) and work at the Department of Communication Systems at the EECS school. The research is linked to the research environment grant DICE-6G (funded by the Swedish Research Council) and the research center SMART 6GSAT (funded by the Foundation for Strategic Research).
Supervision: Emil Björnson along with co-supervision from Cicek Cavdar, Vitaly Petrov, or Gabor Fodor is proposed to supervise the PhD candidate. Decisions will be made at admission.
Eligibility for Admission
To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:
- completed a master's degree, or
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level, or
- acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.
In addition to the above, there is also a link (https://www.kth.se/studies/phd/entry-requirements-for-doctoral-studies-1.520175).
Selection
To succeed in your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. In the selection of applicants, the ability to:
- independently drive your work forward,
- collaborate with others,
- have a professional approach, and
- analyze and work with complex issues,
- and communicate well in English as it is required in daily work.
After the eligibility requirements, significant weight will be given to personal qualities.
Target Degree: Doctorate
Information on Admission and Employment
Only those who have been admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as PhD candidates. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed PhD candidate may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks in, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a PhD candidate is valid for a maximum of one year, and the employment may thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies that will conclude with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
