PhD Subject: Physics, specializing in Nuclear Energy Technology

The Nuclear Safety Group at the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering conducts research on accident phenomena that are essential for risk assessment of current and future nuclear reactors.

The group also performs safety analyses for nuclear power plants, including analysis of design-based accidents and severe accidents. The research projects involve extensive international collaboration.

We are looking for a PhD candidate to conduct cutting-edge research on melt-structure interactions during severe accidents of light water reactors and to perform safety analysis for nuclear power plants. The PhD project is supported by funding from the APRI-12 program and SSM projects.

The work involves (i) conducting experimental and analytical studies on melt-structure interactions that are important for risk analysis of core melt outside the reactor vessel in severe accidents; and (ii) safety analyses of nuclear power plants using simulation tools (e.g., U.S. NRC codes).

Supervision: Professor Weimin Ma is proposed to supervise the PhD candidate. Decisions will be made upon admission.

Eligibility for Admission:
To be admitted to doctoral education (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility:

• completed a master's degree, or
• completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level, or
• acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.

The applicant must have been awarded a master's degree in nuclear engineering or mechanical engineering. The applicant must be eligible to use U.S. NRC codes.

Only those who have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed as PhD candidates. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. An employed PhD candidate may, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a PhD candidate is valid for a maximum of one year, after which the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. For studies that will conclude with a licentiate degree, the total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
