Subject Area Description

Didactics is a subject relevant to teaching and education, focusing on the relationship between the content of teaching, the teacher's instruction, and the learner. The core research questions in didactics revolve around the purpose of teaching as well as the selection of content and methods. These questions arise from studies of the interaction between the subject matter and the teaching and learning of this content that occurs or could occur in various contexts. At the Department of Education, Didactics, and Educational Sociology, diverse research is conducted in combination with various development projects focused on teaching in relation to different aspects of children's and young people's learning in preschool, various school subjects, and higher education. This research focuses on perspectives such as subject didactics, comparative didactics, and general didactical issues, including views on knowledge, educational traditions, democratic education, and sustainable development.

Job Responsibilities

The Professor of Didactics will play a central role in the leadership, management, and further development of the field of didactics, in research and education offered within preschool teacher and teacher programs (including special education programs), independent courses, master's programs, and doctoral education. Overall, the responsibilities will include research, research leadership, teaching, and supervision at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels, as well as overall planning of activities such as formulating research applications. Administrative tasks and collaboration with the surrounding community are also part of the responsibilities. The position may involve leadership assignments.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for appointment as a professor, the candidate must have demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical competence. Scientific competence must be evidenced by independent research contributions that are significant in relation to the subject matter of the position and the tasks included in the appointment, and by the candidate's work maintaining high international and national quality. The candidate must have demonstrated the ability to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research, as well as the ability to obtain research funding in competition. The competence must qualitatively and quantitatively exceed what is required for docent competence. Pedagogical competence must be evidenced by merits in education and teaching as described below under assessment criteria. Additionally, the candidate must have documented competence in supervising students at the undergraduate and advanced levels and have served as the main supervisor for doctoral students up to the doctoral degree. A prerequisite for pedagogical competence is completion of relevant higher education pedagogical training, comprising at least ten weeks, or equivalent knowledge. If there are special reasons, the higher education pedagogical training may be completed during the first two years of employment. The pedagogical training must include training for supervision at the doctoral level. Documented ability to teach in Swedish and English is a requirement. Those who do not have documented ability to teach in Swedish must acquire this ability within the first two years of employment. The candidate must possess the personal qualities required to perform the position well.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria include the degree of competence required for eligibility for the position. Additionally, the degree of other skills relevant to the subject area and job responsibilities will be considered. In filling this professorship, primary weight will be given to scientific and pedagogical competence. In the assessment of scientific and pedagogical competence, particular emphasis will be placed on experience in research and teaching relevant to didactics, familiarity with various traditions and methods within the subject area, and experience in national and international publishing with a broad focus within the didactic field. The university will appoint the candidate who, after a qualitative overall assessment of competence and skills, is deemed to have the best qualifications to carry out and develop the relevant tasks and contribute to a positive development of the activities.
