Do you want to make a difference as a nurse for elderly multi-sick patients?

The Geriatric Acute Care Unit (GAVA) is part of the geriatric section within the primary care clinic at the University Hospital in Linköping.

The section is a research-active university healthcare unit within Primary Care in central Östergötland. The clinic has about 160 employees, of which approximately half work in geriatrics.

We are in an exciting development phase where the number of care places is being expanded. At the same time, we are working long-term for a sustainable work environment with participation, learning, and teamwork in focus.

Our Offer

Welcome to a workplace where care, respect, and safety permeate everyday life. Work at GAVA is both varied and meaningful. Here you meet elderly patients with different backgrounds and life stories – encounters that often leave strong impressions. Daily life can fluctuate between calm and intensity, with rapid changes and new priorities, but there is always time for important conversations and genuine meetings with patients. Please read our career ladder for nurses and also about your benefits with us.

Job Description

As a nurse at GAVA, you lead the nursing work in a care team with 5–7 patients. Our patients often have significant nursing needs, making the nurse a key person in their overall care.

The day begins with a report from the night shift, after which you plan the day's work together with the nursing assistants. You are responsible for medication management, specific nursing interventions, and have daily medical check-ins with doctors. Twice a week, team rounds are held where doctors, occupational therapists, and other professionals jointly plan and follow up on care. You also collaborate closely with municipal nurses, relatives, and care coordinators to create safe and cohesive care for the patient.

There are several supportive functions on the ward that strengthen the team and facilitate your work – coordinator, organizer, social coordinator, and meal host. These roles contribute with administration, guidance, and needs assessment. The clinic also has pharmacists on site who provide support in medication management.

You will receive a four-week introduction tailored to your needs and experiences. It combines e-learning with patient-facing work, and you will follow various side functions to understand the operation. During the introduction, you have a mentor who follows up on your progress and supports you in your development.

The position is located in a facility that operates around the clock, every day of the week. This means working day, evening, and night shifts as well as weekends according to a schedule.

About You

We are looking for a licensed nurse who wants to be part of a team where the care of elderly patients is at the center. Good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written, is necessary to communicate clearly and safely with patients, relatives, and colleagues.

You lead the nursing work in the team with security and care. Your way of creating structure and collaboration ensures that both patients and colleagues feel secure in their daily lives. You meet others with respect and listen to their perspectives. You take responsibility for both your own tasks and the overall care, and you find it easy to plan, prioritize, and see what needs to be done. Work at GAVA often changes, and we value your ability to maintain calm, focus, and joy at work even when the pace shifts.

In your interactions with patients and relatives, you are guided by well-founded values and an ethical compass. You show respect for each individual by meeting the patient where they are – physically, mentally, and socially – and always consider the patient's fragility, needs, and dignity. Through your ethical considerations, you contribute to ensuring that care is provided safely, respectfully, and with care.
