Do you want to help shape Umeå's outdoor environments?

Then you might be our new landscape engineer!

The Park Department manages approximately 1000 hectares of natural land and about 30,000 trees in avenues, squares, and parks.

The green structure in Umeå plays a key role in addressing societal challenges, and as a planner, you will help us develop the city's public spaces and green qualities – from ecological, social, cultural, and economic perspectives.

Your tasks

As a landscape engineer, you will be responsible for the maintenance of parks, green areas, natural land, and technical facilities in part of the city. The work is done in close dialogue with both the operational contractor and colleagues, and you play a key role in ensuring that our environments are maintained efficiently, sustainably, and with the right quality. You will act as a contact person for contractors and follow up on operational efforts, error reports, and minor reinvestments.

You will also participate in working groups where we set the frameworks for what we build today – focusing on long-term sustainability and manageability. A key aspect is understanding the connection between what is built and future operations.

About you

We are looking for someone with experience in park management, preferably with several years of background in outdoor environment maintenance. We believe you have an education as a landscape engineer or equivalent and would like you to have a strong practical foundation – where experience is ingrained and provides confidence in problem-solving, prioritization, and assessments on-site. You are accustomed to taking responsibility for your tasks and have the ability to plan and prioritize. You enjoy solving practical issues in everyday life, but you are also structured, communicative, and clear in collaborations.

A valid driver's license (B) is required.

Different pathways into the role

We would like you to have a specific area of expertise or an interest to contribute to development – this can take various forms. Examples of possible entry points:

  • You have experience in developing and evaluating maintenance methodologies and want to work to ensure that what we build is also manageable. You can contribute to improving existing workflows and thus free up resources to develop and test new solutions.
  • You come from a maintenance or technical background, with knowledge of materials, soil science, or technical facilities such as fountains, lighting, or automatic irrigation.
  • You have an ecological profile and have worked with forest or meadow management, ponds, stormwater facilities, or biodiversity in larger green structures.

Regardless of your background, the most important thing is that you understand the conditions of management – and have the willingness to contribute.

Digital working methods

We actively work with digital systems for planning, monitoring, and documentation. We use digital maps, GIS, case management systems, error reporting, and technical monitoring of, for example, robotic lawnmowers and irrigation.

If you have an interest in technology, GIS, or method development, that is a plus – but above all, you see technology as a support to improve workflows, not as a hindrance.

As a person, we believe you are:

  • Solution-focused, unpretentious, and pragmatic – and enjoy solving issues on-site and in collaboration with others.
  • Independent, but also good at collaborating and creating clear, constructive dialogue with different roles and interests.
  • Communicative – you can explain requirements and solutions both verbally and in writing.
  • Interested in contributing to a long-term sustainable Umeå, both ecologically, socially, and economically.

What do we offer?

You will be part of an engaged team with a broad range of competencies among landscape engineers, landscape architects, and climate adaptation strategists – where experience, curiosity, and collaboration are at the center. We offer an independent and meaningful assignment in an organization where the quality of our outdoor environments is a shared responsibility.

Welcome with your application! We ask that you attach your CV and diploma.
