GIS Engineer at Botkyrka Municipality

Do you want meaningful work that makes a difference in people's lives? Welcome to the municipality that is far from average!

Botkyrka Municipality is the sixth largest municipality in Stockholm County and consists of the districts of Alby, Fittja, Hallunda, Norsborg, Tullinge, Tumba, Vårsta, and Grödinge. Botkyrka Municipality has approximately 95,000 residents and over 6,400 employees.

The Urban Planning Administration manages and develops both urban and rural areas within the municipality. We have the overall responsibility for planning and creating the physical, legal, and business conditions for a safe and good living environment in Botkyrka. Our 125 employees work to enable good housing and an attractive local environment regardless of where one is in life.

The Position and Responsibilities

We are looking for a GIS Engineer who wants to help develop the digital solutions of the future for the urban planning process.

With us, you will play an important role in creating a more efficient and cohesive digital environment for the municipality. We are in an exciting development phase where digitization is a central part, while we also need to manage and further develop existing information and systems.

As a GIS Engineer, you will work on improving work methods and developing tools while contributing to increasing the use of geographic information in the municipality's operations. You will contribute your expertise in everything from developing technical solutions to spreading knowledge about GIS internally. The work is varied and involves both independent assignments and collaboration in project groups. Geographic information is a key component in many of the municipality's processes, especially within urban planning where we create benefits for several stakeholders.

Your main responsibilities include:

  • driving activities and projects within GIS
  • developing technology to refine and make geographic information accessible
  • developing information architecture and integration technology together with our geodata coordinator
  • streamlining and developing processes within GIS
  • providing support and internal training in the GIS area.

You will be part of our GIS team, which currently consists of four dedicated employees. Together, we work to realize our high ambitions and create solutions that make a difference for both the municipality and our residents.

We Offer You

Our unit plays a key role in creating a digital urban planning process with an uninterrupted flow of information. We work on exciting initiatives such as developing work processes for open geodata and improving our base map in 3D to enable a digital twin. We also explore open source solutions to further develop our environment.

We value collaboration both within the unit and with other administrations. In addition, we actively collaborate with the Södertörn municipalities on joint operational support and work methods. With us, you will participate in development projects, face technical challenges, and contribute to a digitally progressive urban planning.

Who You Are

You have a university degree in GIS or equivalent education and several years of work experience in GIS or corresponding experience as assessed by the employer.

Other Requirements:

  • Experience with FME Form.
  • Experience with databases and database management.
  • Experience in driving projects or activities with a focus on results.
  • Experience in handling and structuring large amounts of geographic data.
  • Experience working with GIS technology in complex environments.

We consider it an advantage if you have:

  • Experience with 3D geodata.
  • Experience with open source solutions in GIS.
  • Experience in the geodata field in municipal operations.

To succeed in the role of GIS Engineer, you need to be structured and able to create order in complex processes, especially when handling large amounts of geographic data and developing work methods. You are collaborative and enjoy working closely with colleagues in the GIS team and in projects with other administrations and the Södertörn municipalities. The work requires you to be solution-oriented, as you often encounter technical challenges and need to find effective ways to develop technology and integrations. You are also analytical, which allows you to understand relationships in data and contribute insights that lead to smart digital solutions.

The role means that you sometimes work independently on your own assignments, while also being part of a common way of working in the organization. You are also expected to drive projects and activities together with participants, which requires you to plan your work, take responsibility for implementation, and create engagement in the process. To function well in the assignment, you need to create structure in the projects, collaborate across boundaries, and act calmly and clearly even when conditions change.
