The Control Department has a broad mission to ensure that only approved goods pass the border. The mission involves conducting customs controls on imports and exports where the Swedish Customs looks for goods that violate restrictions and ensures that the correct customs duties and taxes are collected. Controls are also conducted within the country after the goods have passed the border. The Control Department works with the entire chain from intelligence, control, apprehension, and investigation.
About the position
As a customs officer in the external control group, you will primarily work on conducting controls of goods in the flow of freight and travelers to and from Sweden. This may include searching containers, ships, vehicles, luggage, warehouses, and terminals to find goods that are not approved for import or export from Sweden. Examples of such goods include narcotics, pharmaceuticals, weapons, as well as restricted goods that do not meet EU requirements, such as hazardous toys and electronics. The work may also involve administrative tasks where you check customs declarations to ensure that the correct fees are paid and that import and export restrictions are adhered to. The position also involves deciding on coercive measures, which may include apprehending/detaining individuals, reporting crimes, and conducting interrogations.
As a customs officer, you will work uniformed and armed, making various forms of authority decisions and meeting the public and customers daily. We place great importance on your ability to treat people with respect and understanding, that you have good judgment, and that you are a good representative of the Swedish Customs both internally and externally.
You must have the ability to handle situations that are mentally and physically demanding; for example, you may need to be in dirty environments, confined spaces, and often outdoors in all types of weather. You need to have good physical conditions to undergo self-defense training, and you will receive training in handling OC spray and batons. During the training, you will also be trained in service pistols. Furthermore, you need to be a very experienced driver to pass the Customs driving training. The work involves shift work, so you need to be comfortable with irregular working hours.
We are looking for someone who has:
- High school education with at least passing grades in: Mathematics, Social Studies, Swedish, and English
- At least four years of work experience
- Good ability to communicate and express yourself well in spoken and written Swedish and English
- Swedish driver's license, class B for passenger cars, and very good driving experience
- Normal color vision
- The work requires good physical condition and health as the working hours can be irregular and the work and training are physically demanding
- Swimming ability, 200 meters breaststroke
- Swedish citizenship
It is meritorious if you have:
- Experience in taking responsibility and/or leading others – this can be in work, community life, sports, or other contexts where you have had a leadership role
- Experience from roles where you have had a lot of contact with people and needed to adapt your approach and communication
- Ability to communicate fluently in spoken languages other than Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and English as assessed relevant by the employer
- Driver's license for heavy trailers, heavier vehicles, or a snowmobile license
- Experience with dogs or working with dogs

The work is done in groups, which requires you to have great social competence and good collaboration skills. You are confident in yourself, responsible, service-oriented, have integrity, and can work independently within given frameworks and dare to take your own initiative. As a person, you are stable, handle pressure well, and maintain composure even in stressful situations. Other important qualities are that you are legally aware, have the ability to comply with laws and regulations, and have good judgment. You have a flexible attitude and can quickly adapt to changing conditions.

Education and employment
The employment start date is August 31. You will begin your employment as a customs trainee with a basic training program divided into theoretical and practical parts, totaling about 16 months. The theoretical part is interspersed with practical moments and distance self-study, which places high demands on you to take responsibility for your studies. About 100 training days during the theoretical part will be held with attendance in Stockholm. The practical part is conducted at the stationing location. The starting salary during training is 25,800 SEK. After successful completion of the training, the employment will transition to a permanent position with a salary of at least 31,000 SEK.
The work may involve travel over long distances, with overnight stays and service at other locations for several days.

If you proceed in the process, you will first undergo online tests, and those who advance will be invited to a mandatory information meeting on February 28, followed by an interview and assessment by the Duty and Assessment Agency. A security review according to the Security Protection Act will be conducted before employment, as well as a drug test and background check. The Swedish Customs is a total defense authority, and upon employment, you may be assigned to the Customs in the event of war.
