Kriminalvården is growing – we are building new, renovating, and expanding and are now looking for more employees
Our main goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will be safer and more secure for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation, detention centers, and client transportation.
The operational area of Gothenburg South consists of the Högsbo prison, the Högsbo detention center, and the Sagsjön prison.
The Högsbo prison is located in Västra Frölunda and is a prison for men in security class 2 with a total of 63 places. Adjacent to the prison is the Högsbo detention center, which has 98 places. Of these, 54 are intended for individuals with restrictions, while 44 places belong to the common detention center. By 2027, the Högsbo prison and detention center will be ready to open child and youth places. This means that the operation will undergo significant changes as early as spring 2026. This means that large parts of the Högsbo prison and detention center will temporarily close. By summer, only the restricted detention center with 54 places will be open.
The Sagsjön prison is located in Lindome, just south of Gothenburg, and is a newly built prison for women divided into security class two (closed department) and three (open department). The prison currently has a total of 128 places and is the second largest women's prison in Sweden. By 2026, the Sagsjön prison will be ready to open child and youth places. This means that the operation will undergo changes of both a property and organizational nature during the spring. The Sagsjön prison will continue to have 128 places but distributed among security class two, three, and child and youth places.
