JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

As a correctional officer, you can contribute to a safer society. You work in teams with other professionals and have the opportunity to help people break the vicious cycle and motivate them not to reoffend. Clear routines are a natural part of your daily work. You are the one who opens the cell door in the morning and locks it in the evening. You accompany clients to work and education, search and supervise the exercise yard and training facilities. You also have daily contact with the clients to check on their well-being and are part of the release preparations. It is important that you share Kriminalvården's fundamental values of a humane view of people, respect for the individual, and belief in the potential for human development and change.

Working in a prison is varied; care, surveillance, searching, and security work are mixed with release planning as well as conversation and motivational work. The employment starts with a 3-week local introduction at the prison. Depending on the number of training places and our staffing needs, you will then begin your employment with either training or work. If you start working directly, the idea is that you will begin your correctional officer training as soon as possible. It is a mandatory 8-week training program, and you will receive full salary during the entire training period. The training combines theory and practice. During the probationary period, ongoing assessments will be conducted to evaluate your suitability for permanent employment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Your personal qualities are important. As a correctional officer, you need to be secure, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you will drive the operations, so you need to have good teamwork skills and be clear in your communication. You understand the importance of being punctual and having good structure in your work. You should be able to act physically when required.

Requirements:

  • Completed upper secondary education or other education combined with work experience that Kriminalvården deems relevant.
  • Work experience, including seasonal work, part-time employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not considered equivalent to employment.
  • Ability to express yourself well in spoken and written Swedish.

It is meritorious if you have:

  • Work experience in correctional services, security work, social care, psychiatry, or health and social care.
  • B driver's license.
  • Knowledge in relevant fields, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management.
  • Relevant language skills.
  • Good computer skills.

We see that you share Kriminalvården's fundamental values of a humane view of people, respect for the individual, and belief in the human will and ability to develop. As well as an awareness of and understanding of how background, culture, and group affiliation affect oneself and others.
