Comparative Medicine is Karolinska Institutet's central organization tasked with managing today's and developing future laboratory animal activities.

Our goal is to support Karolinska Institutet's research and education with specialist expertise. An ethical approach and ensuring a good environment for both animals and humans are guiding principles in our operations. At Comparative Medicine, veterinarians, animal technicians, biomedical analysts, teachers, and technical-administrative staff work across four of Europe's most modern animal facilities. Our operations are located at Campus Solna.

Your Role

The tasks consist of daily contact with researchers, assistance during experiments, and other routine tasks at an animal facility such as daily care of various animal species, cage changes, biopsy sampling, breeding, marking, and cleaning. Electronic record-keeping and import/export of animals are also part of the job. Training in procedures for other animal technicians and researchers may occur. Working as an animal technician is physically demanding as some heavy lifting is involved. You will be part of a schedule for weekend work and holidays. Your placement will be where the operation currently has a need and may therefore vary between several animal facilities. As an animal technician at KM, you should be comfortable working with all animal species within the operation.

Who are you?

We are looking for someone with a completed high school education, preferably from an agricultural high school or other relevant animal education. To thrive in the role, you need to have a strong interest in the animals' environment and the research conducted at KI. You are responsible, meticulous, and very service-oriented. Furthermore, we see that you easily adapt to changing circumstances and see opportunities in changes. You take responsibility for your work and do what is necessary to achieve a good end result.

Desirable qualifications include knowledge of breeding work, training in Laboratory Animal Science for rodents, injection techniques, blood sampling techniques, and gavage. Experience with electronic record-keeping and previous work experience in other service professions is also advantageous. You possess good knowledge of English and Swedish, both spoken and written. As a person, you enjoy working both independently and in a team. Practical tests may be required to demonstrate your skills. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

What do we offer?

A creative and inspiring environment filled with competence and curiosity. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision is to drive the development of knowledge about life and work for better health for everyone. Here we conduct successful medical research and have the largest range of medical education in Sweden. As a university, Karolinska Institutet is also a government authority. This means you will receive good benefits through our collective agreement, generous vacation, and a good pension plan. You can exercise freely in our modern wellness facilities and receive reimbursement for medical care.
