Postdoctoral Researcher in Condensed Matter Physics

We harness the power of over 40,000 students and staff. Students who provide hope for the future. Staff who contribute every day to Linköping University tackling contemporary challenges. Our values are based on credibility, trust, and security. By being brave, thinking freely, and innovating, we together, through both large and small actions, create a better future. Welcome to apply for a job with us!

Your Responsibilities

This position is divided into two main areas of responsibility:

  • Instrumentation and User Support at MAXPEEM (approx. 50%):
    • Play a key role in the development, maintenance, and optimization of the advanced spectromicroscopy systems at the MAXPEEM beamline.
    • Provide high-level experimental support and technical guidance to international guest researchers (users of beamtime).
  • Research on New 2D Materials (approx. 50%): The research will focus on two groundbreaking projects:
    • Project 1: Synthesis and characterization of new metalene and derivatives. This includes the use of cutting-edge microscopy and spectroscopy to investigate their unique electronic, structural, and plasmonic properties.
    • Project 2: Explore the synthesis of metal layers encapsulated between SiC and graphene. This project is designed to maximize the productivity of the MAXPEEM equipment.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will primarily conduct research. Teaching may also be included in the responsibilities, but no more than one-fifth of the working time.

Your Qualifications

To be eligible for the position of postdoctoral researcher, you must have obtained a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. Your degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made.

It is advantageous if your degree was obtained no more than three years before the application deadline for this position. If there are special reasons, a degree obtained earlier may also be considered, for example, due to various types of statutory leaves.

We are looking for someone with a PhD in condensed matter physics, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Documented practical experience with ultra-high vacuum systems (UHV) and characterization techniques in surface science (e.g., XPS, UPS, LEED, SEM).
  • A strong research background in the synthesis or characterization of 2D materials.
  • Excellent proficiency in English is a requirement.

The following qualifications are particularly meritorious:

  • Direct experience with synchrotron-based techniques, especially photoelectron microscopy (PEEM).
  • Experience in the synthesis of new 2D materials (e.g., thin film deposition using PVD and CVD).
  • Documented programming skills (e.g., Python) for instrument control and data analysis.

As a person, you are a highly motivated and independent researcher with strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to research challenges. You are also a team player with excellent communication and collaboration skills, and can work effectively in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Your Workplace

You will be formally employed at Linköping University (LiU), but your primary workplace will be at MAXPEEM at the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, a world-leading synchrotron light facility. As part of the Department of Material Design at LiU, you will be fully integrated into the university's research environment, which includes participation in regular group meetings and events.
