Postdoctoral Researcher in Synchrotron X-ray Tomography and Mechanics of Metallic Materials
Workplace Description
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities. It has around 47,000 students and more than 8,800 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We unite in our efforts to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of humanity.
Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Gender equality, equal opportunities, and diversity are fundamental principles for all parts of our operations.
The Department of Solid Mechanics was the first department established at LTH and is now part of the Faculty of Engineering (LTH). The department operates in an international environment and has contacts with research organizations and companies both nationally and internationally. Today, the Department of Solid Mechanics consists of about 25 employees, of which approximately 15 are PhD students. The work climate is open and welcoming, striving to provide every employee with opportunities for personal and professional development.
The subject of solid mechanics deals with methods and principles for describing deformable bodies. Solid mechanics is a core subject within mechanical engineering and is fundamentally important for related disciplines. The problems and questions addressed within solid mechanics have clear relevance for industrial applications.
Research in solid mechanics at LTH is specifically focused on constitutive mechanics, numerical methods, microstructure mechanics, structural optimization, and experimental methods. The department also has strong activities in X-ray and neutron methods for materials research.
Project Description
You will conduct research and development activities related to utilizing synchrotron X-ray tomography to study the mechanics of metallic materials. Your work will involve the development, execution, and analysis of in-situ experiments utilizing X-ray tomography and will include the use and development of 3D/4D image quantification for such materials/data as well as the establishment of experimental/data analysis pipelines. You will develop your own experiments and collaborate with users of X-ray tomography at MAXIV across a variety of research areas. You will also be encouraged to develop your own research and research collaborations that utilize or develop X-ray tomography focusing on metallic materials. Utilizing and developing complementary 3D characterization techniques, such as XRD-CT and 3DXRD, as well as linking experiments to numerical simulations may also be included in the work.
The position will be at the Department of Solid Mechanics at Lund University, and the work will be carried out both at the department and at MAXIV (located nearby), as needed.
Job Responsibilities
The main responsibilities of the postdoctoral researcher include conducting research. Teaching may also be included in the responsibilities, but no more than one-fifth of the working time. Within the framework of the position, there is an opportunity for three weeks of higher education pedagogical training. The purpose of the position is to develop independence as a researcher and create conditions for further qualification.
The position will primarily involve research related to the development of X-ray tomography, including in-situ experiments and 3D/4D image analysis (tool development and data analysis) for the analysis of metallic materials and linking to numerical simulations. The research should be related to the utilization/development of tomography, 3D/4D image analysis techniques, or material characterization and will be developed in collaboration with researchers at the department and MAXIV. The responsibilities will also involve interacting and collaborating with users of tomography at MAXIV, e.g., supporting the planning, execution, and analysis of experiments, supporting measurements at the 4D Imaging Lab, 3D/4D image analysis, and interaction with external stakeholders (teaching, workshops), both within and outside academia, to develop the tomography community around MAXIV.
You will be part of a dynamic, international team involved in experimental mechanics and 3D imaging at the Department of Solid Mechanics. You will also be part of the strong international research environment at MAXIV and play a key role in developing the tomography user community around the facility.
Qualifications
To be eligible for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher, the applicant must have a PhD degree, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, in the relevant field. Proof of meeting the eligibility requirement must be submitted no later than at the time the employment decision is made. Primarily, the applicant in question must have obtained their degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the PhD may have been obtained earlier.
Other Requirements:
- Excellent command of English, both spoken and written;
- Knowledge and experience in programming (Python, Matlab, or similar);
- Ability to work both independently and in teams with other researchers and research groups;
- Excellent communication skills.
