The Swedish National Maritime and Transport Museums work with cultural heritage with the vision of broadening people's worldviews through knowledge, experiences, and engagement.

The agency has a well-integrated sustainability effort and also aims to inspire others to act for a sustainable future. We are a museum authority that operates and develops the Maritime Museum, the Maritime Historical Museum, the Vasa Museum, Vrak – Museum of Wrecks, and the Railway Museum. Starting January 1, 2026, the defense historical museums, the Army Museum and the Air Force Museum, will also become part of the agency. The agency will employ approximately 390 staff.

We have exciting development work ahead as the agency grows in 2026. We will continue to develop a culture and working methods where people and ideas have room to grow while building a common culture with shared working methods in a new organizational structure within a larger authority. We are developing an effective collaboration culture characterized by trust, curiosity, and accountability. A culture where we get better together!

About the Position

The position involves working on an as-needed basis, with varying hours focused on weekends, holidays, and during the peak season in June, July, and August. As part of our public team, your primary task is to meet, assist, and guide our visitors throughout their museum experience. This means that you will:

  • Staff the entrance cash register - welcome visitors, answer questions, and ensure a safe and professional reception.
  • Work in the museum shop - assist customers, conduct sales, and inspire sustainable and thoughtful purchases by highlighting the shop's stories.
  • Conduct guided tours in Swedish and English - both for the general public and sometimes for special groups.
  • Participate in and carry out program activities - for example, themed tours, family activities, or public interventions related to our exhibitions.
  • Contribute to a high level of hospitality - you represent the museum in everything you do, create engagement, and provide our visitors with that little extra to make their visit memorable.

Together in the team, we create inspiring knowledge experiences and a hospitality focused on the visitor.

Your Skills and Experience

You should have practical experience in hospitality and service within the museum sector or work in other service professions such as retail and café, where hospitality and service have been a natural part of the job. You should have excellent knowledge of Swedish in both spoken and written form and very good spoken English; other languages are considered an asset. Experience in guiding and/or conducting tours in public activities or working with events and tourism is also considered an asset. It is a plus if you have an interest in our subject area or have studied at the university level in a cultural-historical subject, e.g., history, ethnology, or archaeology.

Your Attributes

We will place great emphasis on personal qualities. You are passionate about hospitality, service, and knowledge sharing and have a good ability to put our visitors first. You show great commitment and are eager to take your own initiatives to solve questions that arise. For you to thrive and gain energy from the job, it is crucial that you enjoy working in a social environment and understand the importance of making people feel welcome. As a museum host, you are the museum's face to the public, and your reception is crucial for the visitor's experience.

To succeed in the role, you should be:

  • Outgoing: You are welcoming and easily establish contact with people of different ages and backgrounds. You are communicative, curious, and comfortable in front of groups.
  • Responsible: You are organized but also attentive to what the situation requires and can prioritize your work even under high visitor pressure.
  • Team-oriented: You understand what it takes to be flexible in your professional role and to work in a team and thrive in a group.
