Gothenburg University meets societal challenges with versatile knowledge. 56,000 students and 6,600 employees make the university a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from all over the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, Gothenburg University contributes to a better future.
The Department of Physics at Gothenburg University is located in modern facilities in the Chalmers area in Johanneberg and has about 120 employees. The research is focused on the subjects of atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter physics, spintronics, complex systems, and biophysics, and is conducted in an international environment with extensive national and international collaborations. The education at the department includes teaching in bachelor's and master's programs in physics, physics in teacher education, and courses in physics aimed at the general public. The Physics Center in Gothenburg, a close collaboration with four other departments within the Faculty of Science and Chalmers University of Technology, creates an innovative environment for all the department's researchers and students.
More information about the activities at the Department of Physics can be found at https://www.gu.se/fysik (https://www.gu.se/fysik). Additional information about Gothenburg Physics Center can be found at www.chalmers.se/sv/centrum/fysikcentrum/Sidor/default.aspx (http://www.chalmers.se/sv/centrum/fysikcentrum/Sidor/default.aspx).
University-wide information about what it means to be a doctoral student at Gothenburg University can be found on the university's doctoral pages https://www.gu.se/utbildning-till-att-bli-forskare (https://www.gu.se/utbildning-till-att-bli-forskare).
Job Responsibilities
We are looking for two doctoral students in condensed matter theory and statistical physics who will work under the supervision of Johannes Hofmann.
Doctoral Project 1 aims to develop advanced statistical methods based on kinetic theory, using both numerical and analytical approaches, to investigate charge and heat transport in electron and electron-phonon gases. The project will focus on hydrodynamic behavior both in solid-state systems and in atomic quantum gases, driven by dominant interactions and recently observed experimentally.
Doctoral Project 2 aims to explore the theoretical principles for manipulating band structures through moiré superpotentials in solid-state systems and to describe the interplay with the phase diagram and quantum geometry. The project is part of a jointly funded collaboration with experimentalists and will continue in close connection with local experimental groups working with graphene and high-temperature superconductivity.
Doctoral education comprises four years of full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree.
As part of your doctoral employment, you may have departmental duties of a maximum of 20% of full-time distributed over the entire training period, which will then generate a corresponding extension of the training period. Departmental duties usually include teaching at the undergraduate and advanced levels, but research and administration may also be included.
Eligibility
For admission to doctoral education at the doctoral level, basic and, if applicable, the specific eligibility established in the general study plan for the doctoral subject is required.
Basic eligibility for doctoral education at the doctoral level is held by those who:
- have obtained a degree at the advanced level, or
- have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or
- have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country.
Specific eligibility is held by those who have:
- obtained a degree at the advanced level in a relevant* natural science subject, or
- completed course requirements of at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level in relevant* natural science subjects, or
- acquired equivalent knowledge relevant to the planned education in some other way, within or outside the country.* Relevant to the planned education at the doctoral level
For specific eligibility, it is also required that the applicant has a good command of English in both spoken and written form. As a guideline, 550 points on the TOEFL test (or 213 points on TOEFL-CBT, or 79 points on TOEFL-iBT) is required.
Assessment Criteria
Selection among applicants who meet the requirements for basic and specific eligibility is based on the ability to benefit from doctoral education.
In the assessment, particular importance is attached to documented qualifications regarding:
We are looking for highly motivated individuals with extensive experience and interest in analytical and numerical calculations in condensed matter physics, statistical physics, or atomic physics. A genuine enthusiasm for working with experimental data is a requirement. Previous research experience in many-body physics or quantum theory is an advantage.
Application
Complete information about admission, qualifications, assessment criteria, and eligibility requirements, as well as how to apply for the doctoral position, can be found in the full announcement at www.gu.se/jobba-hos-oss/lediga-anstallningar (http://www.gu.se/jobba-hos-oss/lediga-anstallningar).
The application must be received no later than: 2025-03-16
The university actively works for a work environment with equal conditions and values the qualities that diversity brings to the organization.
According to the National Archives' regulations, the university is obliged to store application documents for two years after the appointment decision. If you, as an applicant for a position, specifically request the return of your documents, they will be returned after the two years have elapsed; otherwise, they will be disposed of.
