IT Specialist with a Heart for People and a Head for Systems
Do you want to work at an innovative university where different perspectives meet?
Halmstad University creates value, drives innovation, and develops people and society for the future.
Since its inception in 1983, the institution has been characterized by innovation and new thinking. Today, we offer a wide range of educational programs, approximately 14,000 students, and around 700 employees. Our research is internationally renowned and conducted in multidisciplinary innovation and research environments within the university's two focus areas: Health Innovation and Smart Cities and Communities. The university actively participates in societal development through extensive and recognized collaboration with both the private and public sectors.
The IT department at Halmstad University is centralized and currently consists of about 20 employees. The department has a broad mandate and works to provide strategic and operational support to the organization regarding the opportunities and challenges of the university's digital transformation.
Are you our new IT Specialist?
We are now looking for a technically driven IT Specialist for the IT department, within the Support, Service, and Assistance group. You will be an important link between technical development and user needs – in an environment characterized by collaboration, agile working methods, and high technical competence.
We are looking for someone who enjoys stable operations, smart automation, and tricky problems, but who also gets excited about the thought that your efforts actually impact students, teachers, and researchers – for real.
Do you want to help keep a university running?
Imagine a workplace where your day might start with you and your colleagues reviewing how to update our MDM environment and what is most important to tackle right now. Later in the day, you are out in the field, meeting teachers and researchers in their busy routines and translating their needs into sustainable technical solutions. The day might end with you automating a recurring IT task or improving an existing solution so that hundreds of users have a smoother workday, and you are a sounding board for a colleague dealing with an extra tricky support case.
Your new workplace
We work closely with education and research, focusing on creating good IT support for students and staff. In our mixed environment with both PC and Mac platforms, the work is varied and technically developing. We also offer good opportunities for professional development.
As an IT department, we work closely together, share knowledge, and have a short path from idea to decision. With us, you will have experienced, helpful colleagues, the opportunity to influence working methods and tools, and a daily routine where your work is both noticed and appreciated.
The work may briefly include
- Infrastructure & Operations: Server environments (Windows/Linux), virtualization, storage, and backup – you help keep the wheels turning.
- Identity & Security: Directory services, permissions, policies, and security frameworks – you often ask the questions “is it secure?” and “should we store this here?”.
- Automation & Development: MDM and client management (PC/Mac), scripting, integrations, advanced troubleshooting, documentation, and streamlining recurring workflows. Less time on manual fixes, more time on smart solutions.
- Operational Support: You talk to people – not just technology. You help translate needs into solutions, act as a sounding board for both colleagues and the organization, and support our users through our support channels.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who has:
- Relevant university education in IT (or equivalent competence as assessed by the employer).
- 5 years of experience in a broad technical IT role, e.g., IT technician, system administrator, or IT infrastructure specialist where your role has involved working with:
- Server operations in both virtual and physical environments (Windows and/or Linux)
- Configuration of identity and access management in larger environments
- Client management/MDM solutions in larger environments.
- Experience working closely with users – listening, analyzing needs, and translating them into technical solutions.
- Good ability to express yourself in Swedish and English, both orally and in writing.
Important Skills
To thrive in this role, it is important that you are a curious and solution-oriented person who enjoys figuring out how things fit together. You are confident in your skills but unpretentious, equally comfortable with technology as with sitting down with a user, and you appreciate order and structure without shying away from change. You see information security as a natural part of good IT operations. You value collaboration and want to develop together with colleagues.
It is advantageous if you also have experience in:
- System administration of Microsoft 365 (M365)
- Client management and MDM work in an Apple environment
- Installation, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of third-party applications on macOS
- System administration of virtualization environments
- Agile working methods, preferably in cross-functional teams
Personal suitability is highly valued.
