PhD Candidate in Quantitative Logistics

We are now seeking a PhD candidate in quantitative logistics with a focus on efficient and sustainable supply chains. In an exciting project, you will analyze and develop strategies for effective last mile deliveries with a focus on climate and flexibility. Through modeling and data analysis, you will create solutions that make final deliveries smarter and more sustainable.

Your Responsibilities

You will work on a project aimed at achieving efficient and sustainable supply chains, with a particular focus on transport in the last leg of the supply chain (last mile deliveries). The project will identify, analyze, and evaluate strategies to make final deliveries more sustainable than today. You will analyze various scenarios with mixed vehicle fleets, charging infrastructure, and flexibility in delivery regarding both time and place. You will work with mathematical modeling and large datasets to analyze the requirements of charging conditions and how different information flows and planning tools should support the operations.

As a PhD candidate, you will dedicate yourself to your doctoral education and the research project you are part of. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental assignments, up to 20 percent of full-time.

Your Qualifications

You have a master's degree in transport systems, logistics, supply chain management, industrial economics, applied mathematics, or completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level in one of the relevant fields or have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way.

Employment requires that you have a solid knowledge of optimization, mathematical modeling, and quantitative analysis. You are a problem solver and work well with complex issues, understand complicated written materials, and produce high-quality documents yourself. Furthermore, you have a good understanding of numerical data and solve numerical tasks quickly and easily. Experience in route optimization and good programming skills are advantageous.

You have excellent communication skills in English, both verbally and in writing. Additionally, you should be able to work independently, be goal-oriented, and possess strong problem-solving abilities. You should also be clear in your communication and able to collaborate effectively with others.

You will belong to the Department of Science and Technology (ITN), which is known for its activities in logistics, visualization, and organic electronics. We combine academic excellence with fruitful collaboration with the surrounding society. The employment belongs to the Department of Communication and Transport Systems (KTS), which is one of the largest environments in the Nordic region for research and education in the transport field. The activities are conducted within the units of Traffic Systems, Quantitative Logistics, Air Logistics, Railways and Public Transport, Mobile Telecommunications, Construction Logistics, and Construction Technology. The research is mainly externally funded and is carried out in close collaboration with industry, authorities, and society. In undergraduate education, we are responsible for six educational programs.

You will belong to the unit of Quantitative Logistics, which is part of the Department of Communication and Transport Systems.

About the Employment

Upon taking up the position, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. Read more about the respective faculty's doctoral education here.

The employment is time-limited to normally four years full-time. Extension of employment up to five years occurs based on the degree of teaching and departmental assignments. In special cases, further extension may occur. You will initially be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan.

Start date by agreement.

The position may be subject to security classification. If so, a security review with a background check will be conducted before a decision on employment is made.
