About the Workplace, SVA

Dangerous animal diseases can have serious consequences, from suffering in animals and humans to economic losses and disruptions in food supply. The Swedish National Veterinary Institute, SVA, is an expert authority that strengthens Sweden's ability to combat animal diseases that pose threats to critical societal functions through diagnostics, research, and advice. Our vision is "Healthy Animals – Safe People".

In SVA's work as a central and reference laboratory for veterinary diagnostics, the Department of Pathology and Wildlife Diseases (POV) is an important link. Animals and animal organs are sent to us from all over the country for pathological diagnostics. The department has over 40 staff members, including about 20 veterinarians. Within the department, there is the Diagnostics Section that performs diagnostic pathology for production animals, sports and companion animals, as well as laboratory animals. The pathology work is essential for monitoring the disease situation in Sweden. The Diagnostics Section now has a need to recruit a veterinary pathologist.

Job Responsibilities

At the Diagnostics Section, you will work with diagnostic necropsies, including forensic assignments, as well as histopathological examination of samples from necropsy cases and submitted biopsies. After interpreting the results, written reports are made to animal owners and veterinarians. Contacts with clinically active veterinarians and inspection veterinarians are an important part of the job. The pathology work also contributes to SVA's mission to monitor and analyze the development of disease conditions in domesticated animals within the country. Furthermore, SVA is approved as a training site for veterinarians intending to take the European specialist exam in pathology (Diplomate ECVP). As an employee at SVA, you may also be required to work on other tasks or in other departments as needed.

Qualifications

The Diagnostics Section is primarily looking for a veterinarian with experience in veterinary pathology, who can independently perform histopathological examinations and necropsies. Alternatively, we are looking for a veterinarian with a strong interest in pathology. Experience in pathology work is advantageous, but significant emphasis will also be placed on demonstrated interest in disease diagnostics and engagement in pathology work.

It is important for the position that you can work independently with assigned tasks but also have good collaboration skills to function well in our workgroup. Flexibility is an important trait, as daily work needs to be adapted to the operations, and you may need to "step in" within the section as required by the day's work.

You need to have good knowledge of Swedish and English to communicate professionally both verbally and in writing, as well as good computer skills. The work as a pathologist and subject expert requires both good practical skills and the ability to apply theoretical and academic competence. You should want to continuously develop, stay professionally updated, and actively contribute to the development of the organization. You should have a good tolerance for high workloads.

Meritorious

  • Experience in pathology work
  • Good ability to communicate in Swedish and English both verbally and in writing
  • European or American specialist exam in pathology (Diplomate ECVP or ACVP)
  • Experience working clinically with companion animals or livestock
  • Knowledge of the journal system SVALA

Conditions

The employment begins with a six-month probationary period.

Other - Good to Know

Through diagnostics, research, and expert knowledge, SVA contributes to good animal health and reduced transmission of diseases between animals and humans. With the memory of the COVID-19 pandemic, we know that animal diseases can pose a threat to society and severely impact Sweden's food supply, health, and economy. As an emergency authority, SVA is part of the Food Supply and Drinking Water sector.

SVA is a government authority, which means that all messages sent to us become public documents. If you have a protected identity, you should not apply for the job here on the web, please contact us instead.

Tests and work samples may occur during the recruitment process.

The authority may conduct background checks in connection with recruitment.

If you are a Swedish citizen and permanently employed at SVA, you will be placed in a war position within the authority.

For certain positions, a security review with a background check may be conducted according to the Security Protection Act (2018:585) before a hiring decision is made. In some cases, Swedish citizenship is required.

In preparation for the recruitment work, SVA has taken a conscious active stance on recruitment channels and marketing. Therefore, we do not wish to be contacted by ad sellers or recruitment companies.

Grow and develop at SVA – welcome with your application!
