Research Engineer at Skagerak Facility

University of Gothenburg meets societal challenges with versatile knowledge. With 58,000 students and 6,800 employees, the university is a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and perspectives, the University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future.

The Department of Marine Sciences (https://www.gu.se/marina-vetenskaper (https://www.gu.se/marina-vetenskaper)) at the University of Gothenburg has the most complete environment for marine science and marine education in Sweden. Only a few similar organizations exist in Europe. With access to unique infrastructure and a broad scientific competence area that has a clear connection to societal needs and challenges, the department's activities contribute to new solutions to global challenges concerning the ocean.

The Department of Marine Sciences conducts research, education, and collaboration related to the ocean and its resources. The activities are conducted in Gothenburg, at the research stations Kristineberg Center for Marine Research and Innovation, Tjärnö Marine Laboratory, and on the research vessel Skagerak. The department has an interdisciplinary breadth that includes marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology, marine cultural heritage, and oceanography, with research areas spanning from the coast to the open ocean. Our researchers and students often play prominent roles in international expeditions in Antarctica, the Arctic, and the major oceans, but also work in the Swedish coastal zone and in our newly built laboratories with advanced equipment and complex analytical methods. The department also has a wide educational palette with a bachelor's program, three master's programs, and a doctoral program in the marine field.

We are now looking for a motivated and skilled research engineer to join the Skagerak Facility team. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work at the forefront of marine research and education and to support both vessel-based and land-based operations and systems. The role is central to realizing the vision of Skagerak Facility: to provide world-leading research infrastructure that enables advanced and interdisciplinary marine research for the benefit of society.

Skagerak Facility is the university's maritime research infrastructure and includes the research vessel R/V Skagerak, an extensive inventory of marine research equipment, advanced data systems, marine databases, and technical, nautical, and operational expertise. R/V Skagerak is a state-of-the-art research vessel built to support research and education in marine sciences, conducted by the University of Gothenburg or by other national and international institutions. The research and education onboard are interdisciplinary and currently cover the Baltic Sea, North Sea, Iceland, and Greenland, although other areas of operation are also possible. R/V Skagerak is also rented out to commercial actors, particularly in marine environmental monitoring, offshore wind power development, and seabed mapping and infrastructure.

Skagerak Facility is also the main node for the new national infrastructure SWERVE (Swedish Research Vessel Infrastructure for Marine Research), which enables broad national use of research vessels in Sweden, strengthens education and career development for marine technicians, and ensures that vessel data is collected according to high quality standards and made internationally available.

Job Responsibilities

As a research engineer at Skagerak Facility, you will be responsible for providing technical support for the marine research conducted onboard R/V Skagerak. The role involves close collaboration with researchers, the ship's crew, and external users, and you will report to the director of Skagerak Facility. In your daily work, you will work together with the IT and data manager to maintain equipment onboard and ensure proper handling and delivery of measurement data.

The position involves periods at sea of up to three weeks at a time, depending on the schedule and equipment used. On average, the research engineer can expect to spend around 100 days per year at sea.
