Workplace Description
Vattenhallen Science Center belongs to Lund University Faculty of Engineering and operates in collaboration with the Faculty of Science.
Vattenhallen is a joyful interactive meeting place for the public, schools, the university, and the business community where activities of all kinds are offered in the premises with exhibitions on current technological developments and scientific research.
To show our young visitors that they can pursue education in science, the operations are based on staff-intensive activities where student guides meet the visitors. Vattenhallen has become a great success and today has over 50,000 visitors per year from the entire region. About 120 school students (ages 3-18) visit Vattenhallen every day, 4 students do internships every week, teachers come for professional development, companies and organizations come for meetings, kick-offs, competitions, and parties, and on weekends and school holidays, the premises are filled with experiment-hungry families. We have a minibus, ExperimentExpressen, that travels to schools, libraries, and festivals, and we are building a science center operation at the university's campus in Helsingborg.
Vattenhallen currently consists of 15 employees, but also has about 50 student guides who assist the visitors.
Job Responsibilities
The pedagogical activities at Vattenhallen are led and planned by teachers. As a student guide (amanuensis), you are the one who closely meets our visitors. Your tasks will include participating in planning meetings, guiding students or the public in various scientific activities, preparing and tidying up materials, learning new experiments and activities, and sharing your knowledge with new student guides.
The exhibitions and activities at Vattenhallen are based on a strong scientific foundation and are developed in collaboration with researchers and teachers from various parts of Lund University. The work is interdisciplinary and allows for dialogues between researchers and students from all corners of the university. Among Vattenhallen's existing activities, there is such interdisciplinary collaboration, for example, in:
- The Earth and Climate Through Time (Geology, Environmental Science, Energy Technology)
- ESS and MAX IV (Materials Science, Accelerator Physics)
- Artificial Intelligence (Ethics, Cognition, Medicine, Robotics)
- Collaboration with Uppåkra (Archaeology, Environmental Science)
- Democracy (Social Science, Gender Studies, Strategic Communication)
- Programming (Social Psychology, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physical Geography)
Vattenhallen mainly has activities in its premises in Lund but is also looking for amanuenses for our operations at Campus Helsingborg. ExperimentExpressen is our external operation where we travel around Skåne. The starting point is usually from Lund where we have our minibus and materials. When you submit your application, you can express which activities you are most interested in and what extent you would like to work. It is fine to request one or several different activities.
- Vattenhallen Lund, school activities (15, 30, or 45%)
- Vattenhallen Lund, weekend activities (15 or 30%)
- Planetarium, Lund, weekdays/weekends (15, 30, or 45%)
- ExperimentExpressen, school activities and other activities (15, 30, or 45%)
- Campus Helsingborg, school activities (15, 30, or 45%)
15% corresponds to about 6 hours/week, 30% corresponds to about 15 hours/week, 45% corresponds to about 18 hours/week).
Since Vattenhallen has opening hours on weekends and often has events in the evenings, the employment may include some weekend and evening work.
How to Apply
In your application, you will be asked to answer selection questions. The application should include a CV and a cover letter explaining why you are interested in the position and how the position matches your qualifications. We ask you to attach a transcript from LADOK that certifies your eligibility.
