At the Academy of Education, Culture, and Communication (UKK), our students primarily study programs in teacher education, but programs and courses in language and communication, mathematics/applied mathematics, physics, music, and opera, as well as the preparatory education technical foundation year are also offered. MDU's research focus on educational science and mathematics is part of the academy. Our work is conducted in collaboration with the surrounding community and international partners.

A full-time doctoral position is linked to the educational period, which corresponds to four years.

At Mälardalen University, there is an opportunity for mathematics enthusiasts to be part of a dynamic environment in mathematics, including applied areas such as engineering and finance. We are now looking for a PhD candidate in mathematics/applied mathematics to contribute to a research project conducted within our research environment.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Doctoral education in the subject of mathematics/applied mathematics, with a specific focus on the research project that finances the position (see more information below).
  • Institutional duties, which may include:
    • teaching in undergraduate mathematics/applied mathematics that may be conducted at both university campuses, Västerås and Eskilstuna, as well as remotely. Supervision and co-supervision at both undergraduate and advanced levels may also be relevant for the position.
    • administration (e.g., course responsibility or program coordination) and development work with the foundation year, bachelor's and master's programs in technical mathematics and financial mathematics, and mathematics courses within engineering programs at MDU.

Eligibility Requirements

For basic eligibility for doctoral education, one of the following is required:

  • degree at the advanced level
  • at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 at the advanced level
  • otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad.

As a specific eligibility requirement for doctoral education in the subject area of mathematics/applied mathematics, 90 credits in the subject area are required, of which 60 credits at the advanced level. You do not need to have achieved eligibility when you submit your application, but it must be clear from your application that you will have achieved eligibility when the employment is planned to begin.

You must be able to express yourself well in spoken and written English.

Assessment Criteria

A fundamental assessment criterion is the ability to benefit from doctoral education.

For this position, special emphasis will be placed on mathematical ability, particularly in the area of the research project that finances the position. It is also important if you have good knowledge of Swedish.

In a comprehensive assessment of suitability, personal qualities will also be considered. All employees at MDU are expected to collaborate and treat colleagues and students with respect, take responsibility for the operations and their own tasks, and contribute to a good working environment.

Particular importance is placed on your ability to collaborate, as the tasks require cooperation both internally within the academy and with other academies and sections at MDU. As a PhD candidate, you must also be able to work independently and have a structured and well-organized working method, be able to work with many different tasks simultaneously, and independently prioritize and plan your work.
