Forest Unit

The position will organizationally belong to the Forest Unit at the Swedish Forest Agency.

The unit works nationally and is tasked with providing specialist support in various subject areas. Support is provided through training, knowledge compilations, and participation as a specialist in investigations and projects. A large part of the work is carried out in close collaboration with colleagues in the agency's other organizational units as well as in cooperation with other authorities and organizations in the field. The Forest Unit also collaborates with research institutions to contribute to the development of new knowledge and its application in practical forestry. The Forest Unit currently has 24 employees in 13 different locations across the country.

Description

The Forest Unit is now looking for a person with knowledge in both hydrology and hydrogeology to support the agency's rewetting mission (Rewetting of Peatland - Swedish Forest Agency). The expertise is also requested for other tasks such as the construction of forest roads and climate adaptation measures. The Swedish Forest Agency has a long-term mandate from the government to promote the rewetting of drained peatlands, especially where the measure results in reduced net greenhouse gas emissions. This is primarily done today through the signing of so-called rewetting agreements with landowners. The Swedish Forest Agency also sees a need for this expertise as a result of climate change's impact on water in forest landscapes. Furthermore, we see a development where various legal reviews impose higher demands for in-depth hydrological and hydrogeological analyses.

Within our operations regarding rewetting, the Swedish Forest Agency needs to strengthen its competence in hydrological calculations, analyses, and modeling, both to develop principles for how affected areas should be delineated and to continuously support operations with in-depth analyses and assistance during court reviews.

Job Responsibilities

You will work with subject-specific knowledge support in matters concerning hydrology and hydrogeology. The focus of the position is to contribute to the agency achieving the political goals that the Swedish Forest Agency is responsible for within the subject area (Our Operations - Swedish Forest Agency).

Initially, you will primarily work with hydrological analyses of rewetting objects, analysis of soil texture during rewetting, and assist in the development of hydrological GIS tools for various purposes. The position will also involve strategic work to mitigate risks of local flooding and erosion related to forestry measures.

You will also contribute to the development of digital hydrological tools for various forestry purposes.

In summary, the position entails

  • supporting the agency's work on rewetting and forest roads
  • participating in investigations and projects at regional and national levels and producing decision-making materials in cases
  • providing ongoing support to colleagues, both within districts and other units
  • participating in training and calibration exercises
  • representing the Swedish Forest Agency in cooperation with other authorities, the forestry sector, and other forest stakeholders.
  • keeping up with research frontiers and contributing to knowledge development within the subject area

The position allows for remote work. However, the work will involve some travel across the country, for example, in connection with training, information activities, and field visits.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with very good knowledge of hydrology and hydrogeology. You may be a land and water engineer, a geoscientist specializing in hydrology, or have an equivalent university or college degree. We would prefer you to have a PhD and/or substantial experience working on investigative issues within the subject area. It is advantageous if you have good experience in hydrogeological investigations, establishing hydrogeological models, and experience in calculations.

The following specialist skills are particularly sought after:

  • wetland restoration
  • flow dimensioning – calculations of flows in landscapes or risk points for various flows (precipitation or logging/thinning, drainage, roads)
  • design flow
  • knowledge of the effects of soil texture, slope, and vegetation on runoff and groundwater levels as well as significance during earthworks
  • experience using the software Scalgo

You should be proactive and responsible. You have a good ability to communicate in speech and writing, tailored to different target groups, and to convey and share your knowledge. You are comfortable working in a modern IT environment with office software and information and communication technology. We value if you have experience working with GIS and have experience in development work.

To do a good job and thrive in the role, it is important that you are curious about and respectful of others' knowledge and experiences. We are looking for a person who has a strong drive, works well in a team, and is persistent, initiative-taking, and responsible.

Great emphasis will be placed on your personal suitability.
