About Us

The Department of Medical Gastroenterology and Hepatology is a highly specialized unit that investigates and treats patients with diseases of the digestive system, particularly liver disease and inflammatory bowel disease, as well as various diseases of the esophagus, stomach, and pancreas.

The department includes an outpatient clinic, an inpatient ward (ward 16/29), a modern endoscopy unit (GEA), a gastrointestinal laboratory with physiological diagnostics, and finally a center for patients with intestinal failure (TSC). Teaching and research are important parts of our activities at a university hospital.

In the department, we provide both county and regional healthcare, and we have also been assigned several tasks for National Highly Specialized Care (NHV). We regularly organize training and courses aimed at both ST doctors and fully qualified specialists.

We collaborate closely with both medical and surgical specialties at the hospital, making the work stimulating in many ways. Development opportunities in the department are good, and continuing education is a priority for us.

We are now looking for a Specialist Physician/Consultant in Medical Gastroenterology and Hepatology for a permanent position at the Gastro Department, VO Specialist Medicine, Area 6, Sahlgrenska.

Overall Responsibilities

As a Specialist Physician/Consultant, you will perform standard medical work within both our outpatient and inpatient care. We will consider your previous profiling within the specialty to some extent.

On-call duties are also included in the responsibilities, where work as both a medical house call or as a liver on-call may be relevant depending on your background and experience.

The opportunities for engagement in research and education within the department are very good.

Supervision of younger colleagues/ST doctors is also part of the responsibilities, as well as teaching and supervising students from the University of Gothenburg during their clinical placements at the hospital.

About You

We primarily seek someone who is a licensed physician and has a specialist certificate in medical gastroenterology and hepatology. If you have a specialist certificate in General Internal Medicine and have started or are considering starting your subspecialization in medical gastroenterology and hepatology, you are also welcome to apply.

Good professional knowledge and previous experience of clinical work within the specialty in both outpatient and inpatient settings are required. We prefer that you have a good ability to manage patients across the entire gastroenterological and hepatological spectrum. Basic or advanced competence in endoscopy is not absolutely necessary but is viewed very positively. Previous research experience or research ambition is also meritorious.

You speak good Swedish and communicate well with colleagues and patients in both speech and writing. You are collaborative and can adapt flexibly to variations in the workday. You have the ability to organize and prioritize your work effectively.

You collaborate well with your colleagues and other staff groups. This is a prerequisite for a good work environment and for providing safe and quality patient care.
