Workplace Description
The Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC; www.ludc.med.lu.se) is hereby advertising a position as a Bioinformatician. LUDC is one of the world's largest diabetes centres, with approximately 300 employees (researchers and other staff) working to prevent diabetes and improve its diagnosis and treatment. To achieve these goals, we at the centre combine expertise in genetics, epidemiology, bioinformatics, molecular and cell biology, physiology, and clinical diabetes and endocrinology. LUDC has large, unique biobanks and databases containing whole-genome data linked to national registers with data on disease incidence and progression, as well as registers with data on treatment and treatment response. The centre has its own platforms for most molecular genetic methods and metabolomics.
Tasks and Responsibilities
The appointed candidate (the bioinformatician) will join the Bioinformatics Unit at LUDC, which consists of two bioinformaticians, a biostatistician, a data manager, a data engineer, and an IT-data manager (LUDC Bioinformatics Unit | LUDC). The unit provides bioinformatics, biostatistics, and computational support to all affiliates of LUDC, as well as access to a high-performance computing environment. The support includes participation in both long-term research projects and smaller projects, as well as being available for consultations, questions, and guidance within the framework of various LUDC projects.
You will handle requests and deliver short- and long-term bioinformatics solutions to researchers at LUDC who are not bioinformaticians. You must be able to communicate effectively with non-experts in the field and plan/distribute your time among several different projects. The bioinformatician will contribute to the preparation of manuscripts with state-of-the-art analyses and publication-quality figures/graphs.
The bioinformatician will be involved in all aspects of the development, implementation, and management of bioinformatics/computational pipelines for various types of data, including but not limited to genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, as well as clinical data and metadata. We also expect the bioinformatician to independently follow developments in the bioinformatics field to improve existing pipelines and present alternative solutions for how to best utilize available data and resources.
Another important part of the work performed by the bioinformatician involves quality control, processing, and analysis of data for the Human Tissue Laboratory (HTL), a very important resource for LUDC researchers. HTL collects human tissue samples for research purposes and performs central analyses of these materials, which are available to colleagues at LUDC and Uppsala University.
The candidate is also expected to participate in training and provide support to LUDC staff and researchers in the selection and use of bioinformatics tools.
Qualifications
Requirements for the position:
- PhD in bioinformatics, mathematics, molecular biology, statistics, computer science, or another related field.
- Proven experience in applying quantitative methods to data analysis tasks, as well as experience with programming and computing clusters.
- Practical experience in handling, analyzing, and annotating various types of omics data from high-throughput technologies, such as single-cell, bulk, and spatial RNA sequencing, ChIP-seq, CUT&RUN, DNA methylation analyses, eQTL mapping, and immune repertoire sequencing, both in exploratory analyses and in standardized analysis workflows.
- Proficiency in R and knowledge and experience with BASH/UNIX.
- Experience in biostatistics as well as machine learning algorithms and frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, Keras, and TensorFlow).
- Experience in data analysis and data mining to identify trends and produce meaningful data visualizations. Experience with web-based bioinformatics tools and public biological data databases.
- Highly capable of collaborating in interdisciplinary teams, which may include laboratory researchers, physicians, epidemiologists, bioinformaticians, statisticians, and data analysts.
- We will also consider personal attributes where self-motivated and flexible individuals, who can work independently in a well-documented manner, handle multiple projects in parallel, and prioritize and meet deadlines, will be prioritized.
- Documented excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
Qualifications that would be considered an asset:
- Experience working with reproducible research tools such as R Markdown/Quarto, Git, Conda, Snakemake, or other workflow languages and container-based solutions.
- Experience with artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and deep learning for the analysis of biological and biomedical data.
- A GitHub profile with code examples is advantageous.
- Experience with another programming language (e.g., Python, Java, Perl).
- Experience working with multi-omics data integration.
- Experience analyzing metagenomics and (phospho)proteomics data.
- Excellent communication skills (both oral and written), including oral presentations and poster presentations.
- Experience in education and/or teaching.
- Experience working in an international environment.
Other Information
The position is a permanent full-time appointment, with a start date of October 1, 2026, or as agreed. A six-month probationary period may apply.
