Working as a Pilot Area Manager at the Swedish Transport Administration (Sjöfartsverket)

The Swedish Transport Administration provides pilotage and pilot assistance to vessels within compulsory pilotage areas. As a Pilot Area Manager, you represent the Swedish Transport Administration locally towards customers, authorities, and other stakeholders, and hold the nautical responsibility for the fairways in the pilot area.

You will be responsible for the Marstrand pilot area, which covers a geographical area along the Bohus coast, from Marstrand in the south to Strömstad in the north. The pilot area consists of the Marstrand and Lysekil pilot stations.

You have personnel responsibility for a group of approximately 25 pilots and 1 administrator who work from the Marstrand and Lysekil pilot stations. You are part of the management group for the Pilotage Business Area and report to the Business Area Manager. The position involves travel and on-call duty according to a fixed schedule.

Responsibilities

In the role of Pilot Area Manager, you are responsible for operations and development within the pilot area and work to ensure that the business is customer and stakeholder-focused. You are responsible for financial and operational follow-up and have budget, personnel, and result responsibility for the area. You lead the nautical work with the pilots and hold the overall nautical responsibility for the area. Daily operations include ensuring that vessels receive pilots. Together with your regional colleagues, you represent the Swedish Transport Administration towards customers, the public, and other authorities, and assist the Infrastructure Department in responding to inquiries related to the pilot area. Together with supervisors, you follow up on and examine pilots during their training.

The responsibilities also include coordinating regional crisis preparedness work and total defense planning, as well as collaborating with county administrative boards and other actors within the framework of crisis preparedness and total defense. Since a large part of the work also involves participating in, developing, and leading pilotage operations from a national perspective, it is a prerequisite that you have the opportunity to travel for work.

Who are you?

We are looking for you with an academic university education with training in maritime affairs. You have recognized good leadership qualities, preferably from leadership roles on board ships, shipping companies, business life, or public organizations. Your leadership is communicative, coaching, and trust-based, and you give employees the opportunity for participation, engagement, and responsibility. You have integrity and are accustomed to a driving approach to working with changes and business development in an operational environment. You have previous experience of long-term and strategic change work in complex organizations.

We want you to have experience of working in operational activities within shipping, logistics, and transport, or similar activities. We preferably see that you have good knowledge of sea traffic, maritime safety, ports, shipping, cargo owners, and cargo flows. If you also have experience of working with continuity/total defense planning, we see this as meritorious.

The Swedish Transport Administration may apply a six-month probationary period. The position may involve war-time placement at the Swedish Transport Administration.

The position may require Swedish citizenship. Security clearance with register check may be conducted before an employment offer is made.
