Do you want to help lead Malmö towards a more sustainable and healthy city? We are now looking for a Unit Manager for Environmental Inspection at the Environmental Administration in the City of Malmö. As a Unit Manager here, you will combine leadership, environmental issues, and societal development, seeing the direct impact of your work in the daily lives of Malmö residents.
Responsibilities
A central responsibility as Unit Manager is to lead and develop the work within environmental inspection. You will have overall responsibility for a operation that combines inspection, advisory services, and development – always with a focus on quality, service, and sustainable societal development.
There is room here to think creatively and contribute to developing common working methods that make inspection more efficient and uniform. With the Environmental Code as a foundation and a holistic perspective as a starting point, we weigh environmental, economic, and social sustainability into our decisions. You will become a key part of turning our strategies into concrete daily practice – together with other managers and colleagues within the Environmental Administration and the City of Malmö.
The role includes creating the best possible conditions for a competent and engaged team passionate about making a difference in environmental work. You work closely with employees, drive the operation forward, and ensure that the work maintains a high professional standard.
The unit has a broad and socially important inspection mandate that is central to the municipality's environmental work and simultaneously contributes to good and predictable conditions for Malmö's business community. The unit covers a wide spectrum of industries and operations requiring both precision and service-oriented inspection. Work here involves the waste and vehicle sectors, manufacturing industries, dental practices, refrigeration systems, and the handling of chemical products. It is a unit with great variety where inspection has direct significance for security, safety, and a sustainable environment.
As a manager, you have the opportunity to contribute to and shape the work in an important unit and become a key person in our joint pursuit of a responsible, modern, and effective environmental inspection.
Qualifications
We are looking for a communicative and present leader who creates engagement and security in both daily operations and change. You have a strategic holistic view, drive development, and ensure operational progress. You want to contribute to a modern and service-oriented authority with a focus on sustainability and innovation.
You have management and leadership experience with the ability to lead, motivate, and develop teams based on trust-based leadership. You also have experience in exercising authority according to the Environmental Code, preferably supplemented with urban planning from a broader perspective. You have previously worked in a politically governed organization and have good knowledge of the Environmental Code as well as other relevant laws and regulations. You hold an academic degree in environmental or natural sciences, engineering, law, or another equivalent education deemed relevant for the role. Additionally, you have very good proficiency in Swedish, both spoken and written.
It is meritorious if you have experience in environmental and health protection inspection, change management, and the municipal service mandate, with a good ability to understand needs and expectations from different perspectives. It is also meritorious if you have completed management or leadership training.
About the Workplace
The department consists of approximately 60 employees, distributed across one unit for health protection and two for environmental inspection. The position is located at one of the environmental inspection units. The unit primarily works with business operators within the commercial sector. We are responsible for inspecting, among others, the waste and vehicle sectors, manufacturing industries, dentists, refrigeration systems, and the handling of chemical products. Through information, advice, and service, we support operations and help minimize risks to both the environment and human health.
The mandate of the Environmental Administration is to improve the environment and protect human health. We lead and coordinate Malmö City's environmental and climate work, conduct inspection according to the Environmental Code and the Food Act, and drive the transition towards a more sustainable city. Through inspection, advice, and strategic environmental work, we make a difference for Malmö and the planet. At the Department of Environmental and Health Protection, we are responsible for inspection according to the Environmental Code covering everything from homes, schools, and industries to waste, water, and contaminated land. This means we review permits, handle notifications, and respond to referrals. Every year, we inspect hundreds of operations – from heavy industry with hazardous waste to smaller workshops and dental clinics.
The City of Malmö's operations are organized into 14 administrations. Our joint mandate is to create welfare and sustainable societal development. Together with the residents of Malmö, we are developing an even better city to live, work, and be in; differences, life experiences, and talents make Malmö a smart city in the heart of Europe. The world's knowledge is here.
