About the Workplace
Are you ready for a bigger challenge?
The Swedish Police Authority is Sweden's largest agency with approximately 40,700 employees nationwide. Here, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the Police's mission to increase safety and reduce crime in society.
Police Region East consists of three police districts: Östergötland, Södermanland, and Jönköping. The Jönköping Police District is divided into three local police districts: Höglandet, Southern Vätterbygden, and Värnamo. At the district level, there is an investigation section and a district office.
In the Southern Vätterbygden Local Police District, there are intervention and crime prevention operations, investigation groups, traffic operations, the regional intervention unit, dog operations, as well as support and service.
We are now seeking detention officers stationed in Jönköping for both permanent positions and temporary assignments of approximately 6 months, with a possibility of extension.
Job Responsibilities
The work in the detention facility is conducted under the leadership of a station commander and in close collaboration with the other operations of the local police district. As a detention officer, you handle and interact with individuals who have been deprived of their liberty for various reasons. A deprivation of liberty may be for the purpose of investigating a crime, but it can also involve shorter detentions due to intoxication or disturbance of public order.
Your main responsibilities include:
- Assisting intervention operations during reception and searching
- Surveillance and supervision of detainees
- Administrative tasks, such as documentation of detentions and registry entries
- DNA sampling, fingerprinting, and photographing the detained individual (booking)
- Recording police reports and documentation in the police's data system
- Supporting other operations with simpler administrative tasks
The pace of work varies over time and depends on the number of people subject to different types of deprivation of liberty. The work requires professional interaction and an attitude characterized by respect for everyone's equal value. You must also have good health and physical conditions, as the work requires you to act physically on certain occasions. The work is conducted around the clock, 365 days a year, which means irregular working hours including day/evening/night shifts on weekdays and weekends.
You will undergo introduction and training to become qualified to work in the role of a detention officer.
Work may occasionally take place at police stations other than the one you are employed at.
Qualifications
This is an opportunity for you if you have:
- A completed and approved upper secondary education with final grades or equivalent education assessed by the employer as equivalent
- Previous experience working with people in vulnerable situations from, for example, the Swedish Police Authority, the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, social services, healthcare, or psychiatry, and/or experience in service work involving significant customer contact that the employer deems relevant for the position
- Good computer skills
- Good ability to express yourself well in speech and writing in Swedish
- Good ability to express yourself, primarily in speech and comprehension, in English
- Category B driver's license
It is an advantage if you have:
- Completed the Police's detention officer training with a passing grade
- Experience working as a detention officer or similar
- Experience with administrative tasks such as documentation skills
Personal Qualities
The tasks require you to have the ability to make responsible and wise individual assessments. You will meet people who are in poor physical and mental health, so it is important that you are professional in your interaction, regardless of the reason for the deprivation of liberty. The work can sometimes be stressful, requiring you to maintain good prioritization skills and act rationally and professionally even under pressure. The work is also physically demanding, requiring good physical fitness. We appreciate that you are empathetic and understanding, but you should also be able to set boundaries and follow decisions. You have a high sense of service and the ability to create good relationships with both the public and colleagues. It is also important that you are careful, flexible, and enjoy working in an environment where you handle several different tasks simultaneously.
We will place great emphasis on personal qualities.
