With a focus on new computational and data representation methods for efficient artificial intelligence
Do you want to develop your research and teaching in an environment where collaboration with industry and society is second nature? Here, you will work with engaged colleagues, have access to modern research infrastructure, and enjoy excellent opportunities to attract external funding. You will have the space to make a real difference for your students, your research, and society at large. Luleå University of Technology is in an expansion phase and is implementing an initiative to strengthen research and education in computer science, with a particular focus on algorithms, data structures, and advanced computational models.
Computer science is a rapidly growing and evolving field that forms the foundation of today's and tomorrow's digital society. Developments in artificial intelligence, large-scale data management, and distributed systems are placing increased demands on new ways to represent, process, and interpret information.
To meet these challenges, research and education are needed that combine classical computational models with new approaches to computation and representation, particularly in high-dimensional and complex data environments. This initiative is directly related to the university's computer science environment and offers good synergy opportunities with research groups in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, cyber-physical systems, and data-intensive applications. Therefore, we see a focus on research and development of new methods for the representation, processing, and analysis of complex information as important. These methods range from basic method-level research, such as algorithm development and models for efficient information representation, to applied research in collaboration with other groups.
The Department of Computer Science at the Division of Systems and Space Technology, Luleå University of Technology, is now seeking an Assistant Professor to contribute to our growing operations.
Subject Description
Computer science encompasses research on algorithms, data structures, computational models, and software engineering for the development of resource-efficient, distributed, and intelligent systems with applications in future digital infrastructure. The subject also has a special responsibility for didactic development within the fundamentals of computer science.
Responsibilities
The Assistant Professor will be engaged in the university's education through courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition, pedagogical development work and research are included, primarily within new approaches to computation and data representation, especially in high-dimensional and complex data environments, as well as other sub-areas of computer science based on personal research interests and ongoing research projects.
Qualifications
To meet the requirements for appointment as an Assistant Professor, the applicant must:
- hold a doctoral degree, or have a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree.
In the first instance, preference should be given to those who have obtained their doctoral degree no more than five years before the application deadline. However, those who have obtained a doctoral degree or equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.
Evaluation Criteria
The following evaluation criteria apply for the position:
- scientific proficiency
- other evaluation criteria
The following other evaluation criteria are weighted equally:
Other Evaluation Criteria:
- degree of such skill as is a requirement for qualification
- documented scientific proficiency through publications as first author in high-quality scientific journals and conferences
- documented research mobility, for example through postdoctoral stay or other research stay at an international university or research environment with a high scientific profile
- administrative skill that is significant with regard to the subject content and the duties included in the employment
- ability to collaborate with the surrounding society
- ability to inform about research and development work
- ability to teach in Swedish
Duration of Employment
This employment is for a fixed term of four years.
Trial Period for Professorship
The purpose of the employment is to give the teacher the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and to gain merit both scientifically and pedagogically to meet the requirements for qualification for an appointment as a Professor.
An Assistant Professor shall, upon application, be promoted to Professor and appointed permanently if they have the qualification for a Professorship and, upon evaluation, are deemed suitable for such an appointment according to the evaluation criteria specified below.
For evaluation, it is required that the Assistant Professor has completed higher education pedagogy corresponding to 7.5 ECTS credits or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge.
During the employment period, the Assistant Professor must also have independently, to a considerable extent and with high quality, contributed to the university's research and demonstrated good pedagogical skill.
