The Baltic Sea Centre at Stockholm University is looking for a Research Technician who will be responsible for the development and operation of various scientific instruments and sensor infrastructure at the Baltic Sea Centre's field station, Askö Laboratory, as well as on Stockholm University's (SU) own research vessel, RV Electra.

The Baltic Sea Centre at Stockholm University is the hub for the university's research on the Baltic Sea. The work is carried out both within the centre and in close collaboration with other departments. Through an interdisciplinary approach, we provide knowledge that supports authorities and other societal actors in their work towards sustainable management of the Baltic Sea environment.

A key part of our mission is to support marine research and education by providing advanced research infrastructure. At Askö Laboratory in the Trosa archipelago, researchers and students have had access to a field station and research vessel since the 1970s. Our largest research vessel, R/V Electra af Askö, is equipped with modern marine measurement technology that enables both research and education within several marine disciplines. Responsibilities

The Baltic Sea Centre manages a comprehensive instrument park that requires ongoing supervision, maintenance, and development. The instruments are used in research projects and include both portable field instruments and permanently installed equipment, such as mass spectrometers as well as oceanographic and geophysical measurement systems.

The primary workplace is Askö, in the Trosa archipelago, but there will occasionally be meetings on the SU campus with researchers and other technical expertise. At Askö, you will be part of a team working closely together to meet the needs of various research projects and field courses.

The main responsibilities for the Research Technician will include:

  • developing and maintaining scientific equipment and electronic measuring instruments at Askö Laboratory,
  • developing and maintaining scientific equipment and electronic measuring instruments on RV Electra,
  • participating in national research cruises and supporting measurements such as geophysical mapping, as well as sediment, water column, and atmospheric measurements.

Areas of responsibility include the following:

  • In collaboration with the staff at Askö Laboratory as well as researchers and technicians at Stockholm University, be responsible for the operation, development, and maintenance of the following electronic measuring instruments and research systems: geophysical measurement systems on board the research vessel, such as multibeam echosounders, sediment-penetrating echosounders, and echosounders for fisheries research; oceanographic measurement systems, such as CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) and ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler); ROV systems (Remotely Operated Vehicle); FlowCytoBot (automated flow cytometer and robotic microscope); and atmospheric measurement systems (mass spectrometers).
  • Maintenance and development of IT infrastructure on RV Electra and measurement platforms.
  • An active role in collaboration regarding data transfer/storage in the Baltic Sea Centre's databases as well as documentation of workflows.
  • Participation in the planning and execution of scientific cruises and field campaigns in collaboration with researchers and other staff.

Qualifications

  • The applicant must have an academic degree in engineering or a natural science education with technical competence that the employer can assess as equivalent.
  • At least 1–2 years of work experience in machinery/technology with practical experience in performing installations and repairs.
  • As a person, you are proactive and have a structured approach to work. You are interested in technology and willing to learn new skills.
  • You have a positive and solution-oriented attitude and possess good communication skills both verbally and in writing with researchers, suppliers, and colleagues in both Swedish and English.

Merits

In this recruitment process, we consider the following criteria as meritorious:

  • Experience with and knowledge of software for research data collection and processing, as well as script programming/programming.
  • Experience with open-source scientific software and databases.
  • Experiences in education/worklife that demonstrate a genuine interest in realizing the full potential of our instrument park and marine research infrastructure.
  • Experience in project management and working in scientific teams.
  • Experience from data collection within earth system and environmental science.
  • Good boating skills, preferably Class VIII shipmaster certificate.

About the Position

Full-time employment as technical/administrative staff with a six-month probation period. Start date as soon as possible or by agreement.
