School Librarian and Fritids/Junior Club Staff at Internationella Engelska Skolan Umeå

Are you a passionate, qualified Librarian who also loves actively engaging with students outside the classroom? Do you want to shape a vibrant reading culture while being a visible, supportive role model in our school community?

Internationella Engelska Skolan (IES) Umeå is looking for a dynamic School Librarian and Fritids/Junior Club Staff member to join our international team. This is a unique, combined 100% position where you will spend 50% of your time running and developing our school library, and 50% working as a cover teacher and within our Fritids (for younger students) and Junior Club (for older students) programs.

Your Role & Responsibilities

In this combined role, you get the best of both worlds: academic leadership in the library and relationship-building during recreational hours.

School Librarian (50%)

  • Library Leadership: Take ownership of the library space, manage the cataloging/lending system (Quria), and handle media acquisitions that spark a lifelong love for reading in both English and Swedish.
  • Reading Promotion: Drive literacy initiatives, book clubs, read-a-thons, and storytelling sessions tailored to different age groups.
  • MIB (Media and Information Literacy): Support teachers by instructing students—particularly in middle school—on research skills, source criticism, and safe digital navigation.
  • Digitalization: Continue the digitalization of our library media to ensure it is a modern, accessible hub for learning.

Cover and Fritids / Junior Club Staff (50%)

  • Student Engagement: Plan and lead meaningful, safe, and fun recreational activities for our students after lessons.
  • Bilingual Environment: Actively use both English and Swedish to support students' language development in an informal setting.
  • Social & Emotional Support: Act as a strong, visible mentor, fostering a safe and orderly environment where every child feels seen and included.

Who Are We Looking For?

Requirements (Qualifications)

  • A degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent qualification.
  • Fluency in English and Swedish (both written and spoken), as you will operate daily in our bilingual school environment.
  • A clear copy of your police record check (extract from the criminal record) will be required prior to employment.

Meritorious Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience working as a school librarian.
  • Experience working in schools and in particular Fritidshem (after-school care), youth recreation, or as a supervisor for school-aged children.
  • Personal Attributes: You are structured and independent enough to run the library, yet highly collaborative and enthusiastic about teamwork. You are an initiative-taker who easily builds strong, respectful relationships with students, teachers, and parents alike. You embrace the IES ethos of "tough love"—meaning you are warm and caring, but maintain firm boundaries to ensure a safe, orderly environment.

What We Offer

We offer a welcoming, international workplace where your ideas matter. You will be part of a structured, supportive team in Umeå, while also gaining access to the wider IES national network of librarians and educators for professional exchange.

Application

Does this sound like your next challenge? We look forward to hearing from you! Please apply with your CV and a cover letter (in either English or Swedish) through our application portal.

Interviews are held continuously, and the position may be filled before the closing date.

Welcome with your application!

Internationella Engelska Skolan (IES) is a leading independent school group with academic results far above average and a diverse and energetic staff. Teaching is in both Swedish and English, and the hallways are bilingual. The language of meetings and communication amongst the staff is English.

IES is one of Sweden's largest school groups at compulsory school level with 48 schools and around 32,000 students across the country. IES has grown steadily and maintained quality since 1993.

N.B. Prior to any offer of employment at IES, a criminal background check is required for all applicants. In Sweden, this is an extract from the criminal record (belastningsregistret) from the Police Authority, and from abroad, this is a record extract from an equivalent police governing body.
