The Department of Linguistics and Philology at Uppsala University conducts research and education in linguistics and text studies, with a particular focus on the languages and cultures of Asia, classical languages of Europe, linguistics, and computational linguistics. We offer education at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. The department has approximately 70 employees who, together with students and partners, create an international and intellectually vibrant environment. Uppsala University is one of the few institutions in the world conducting research on language standardization and the development of digital resources for the Balochi language.

Job Description

The duties primarily consist of developing resources for the Balochi standard written language, Modern Standard Balochi. Specifically, this involves:

• Standardizing spelling and grammar in Balochi short stories and poems (in both Arabic and Latin scripts).
• Translating Balochi short stories and poems into English.
• Creating a comprehensive parallel corpus for Balochi-English to serve as a foundation for machine translation.
• Grammatically annotating Balochi data for morphological analysis.
• Expanding the vocabulary of an online Balochi-English dictionary.
• Contributing to the creation of a preprocessing pipeline for Balochi for further language technological analysis.

Qualifications

The position requires good proficiency in both Modern Standard Balochi and English. You must be able to document the ability to author high-quality texts in both languages and to translate between them.

Desirable and Meritorious Qualifications

Experience as an author in Balochi or as a translator between Balochi and English is meritorious. Lexicographical work (Balochi-English) is also considered a merit. Experience with grammatical annotation of Standard Balochi texts is advantageous, although training in this area will be provided during employment. Previous experience with text editing and/or book publishing in Standard Balochi is also valuable.
