The Department of Materials Science aims to be an environment for successful and valuable research and education focused on materials science solutions for important societal challenges. Read more about us here (#)

About the Division

The Division of Medical Technology is part of the Department of Materials Science at the Ångström Laboratory. We conduct basic research on the development and evaluation of new materials interacting with biological systems to understand the underlying principles. It is equally important for us to study the impact of materials on biological processes as well as the impact of biological processes on materials. Our ambition is to create a dynamic teaching and research environment that is internationally recognized for its excellent ability to combine basic research with clinical applications.

The position is located at the Division of Medical Technology within the interdisciplinary research group EMBLA, led by Professor Maria Tenje. The group conducts successful and internationally recognized research on organs-on-chip and droplet-based microfluidics in collaboration with research teams at several Swedish and foreign universities. Research funding has been obtained through several prestigious grants, including from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and the European Research Council (ERC).

Project Description

Together with our collaborator Dan I. Andersson, a world-leading expert in bacteriology and antibiotic resistance, we have developed a droplet-based microfluidic system for the rapid diagnosis of heteroresistance – a form of antibiotic resistance common among many bacterial species and antibiotic classes. We are now interested in exploring the possibilities for clinical implementation of the technology and are therefore looking for a person who can develop a fully integrated and user-friendly prototype for automated analysis.

Responsibilities:

The main responsibility in this position is to develop a user-friendly prototype for the detection of heteroresistance (HR), adapted for use in a clinical environment. You will be responsible for the design, assembly, and characterization of the fully integrated prototype where the droplet-based HR detection analysis can be automated under carefully controlled conditions, e.g., stable temperature. The prototype's hardware should include simple sample handling, automated fluid handling, and an optical detection system. Furthermore, the prototype should be equipped with a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) and an integrated image analysis platform, so that even personnel without specialized training can use the system and interpret the analysis results.

Qualifications:

Master's or Civil Engineer degree / education in technical physics, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, or equivalent education in a related field. We also require documented knowledge and experience in:

  • development of experimental platforms for microfluidic systems
  • handling of interfaces between chip and environment for fluidics and electronics
  • microscopy and/or optics for data collection and analysis
  • software for controlling experimental equipment, e.g., LabView, MATLAB, or similar
  • GUI design using e.g., Python, Figma, or similar
  • Good written and oral skills in English

Desirable / Meritorious Qualifications

Documented knowledge and experience in the following areas is desirable for the position:

  • microfabrication and microsystem technology
  • microbiology and antibiotic resistance
  • medical technology
  • basic understanding of regulatory processes and documentation

About the Position
