Description

The Mission of the Environmental and Climate Committee is to lead the city's environmental work as well as the protection of human health and the environment. In practice, this means that the Environmental Administration drives and coordinates the city's work within the ecological dimension of sustainable development, supporting and promoting the implementation of the city's environmental and climate programs and the use of the city's environmental management system. Additionally, in our regulatory authority role, we are responsible for supervision, review, and control in accordance with, among other things, the Environmental Code, as well as the Food Act, Alcohol Act, and Tobacco Act. Job Responsibilities

Do you want to work for a sustainable city and a good living environment in Gothenburg? We at the Environmental Strategy Department drive and coordinate the ecological dimension of sustainable development in the City of Gothenburg. The goal is for Gothenburg to be an ecologically sustainable city by 2030. We drive, coordinate, and follow up on several of the City of Gothenburg's strategic programs and action plans. The department is also responsible for environmental monitoring in several areas and contributes to the City of Gothenburg's planning and building permit process. We produce decision-making materials for politics based on the latest knowledge within the environmental field, from research, environmental monitoring, and our own analyses. We collaborate with other municipalities, authorities, academia, and business, and drive and participate in various development projects.

The department has fifty-five employees. To create the best possible conditions for a good working environment, with fewer employees per manager, and to strengthen the department's strategic capability, we are moving from three to five units at the turn of the year. We are now seeking three new unit managers in three separate advertisements.

This advertisement concerns the appointment of a Unit Manager for the unit responsible for

  • environmental monitoring and strategic development work and support within the air and noise area, as well as handling planning cases and support for the city's strategic urban development

As a Unit Manager, you lead thirteen engaged and qualified employees with high competence and long experience. Together, you drive and coordinate the City of Gothenburg's work within the ecological dimension of sustainable development, partly by following up on the environmental status of the city with a focus on air and noise issues, and partly by driving and handling urban development cases.

The Unit:

  • Drives and coordinates strategic work within the unit's subject areas.
  • Carries out the city's environmental monitoring within air and noise according to direct and indirect legal requirements.
  • Provides expert support in urban development processes and in the administration's supervision activities.
  • Responds to consultations and motions, etc., within the unit's subject areas, and drives the administration's work to respond to consultations within the planning process, as well as the work to support the planning process with expertise in the municipality's comprehensive planning for land and water use.
  • Collaborates with other parts of the City of Gothenburg, authorities, academia, civil society, and business.
  • Participates in and drives projects as well as internal and external networks.

As a Unit Manager, you are responsible for:

  • Creating security in the unit as well as business groups and supporting the development of employees and the business.
  • Contributing to good cooperation within the department's management group and with other departments.
  • Budget, business planning, and follow-up of the unit's business.
  • Ensuring progress and prioritizing in the unit's strategic and operational business.
  • Quality-assuring materials prior to decisions.

You are the closest manager for the unit's employees and you are responsible for business, personnel, economy, and working environment. You are part of the department's management group and develop the department's business together with the department manager and your fellow unit managers. Within the department, many issues and areas are handled in close collaboration between several units, and often also with other businesses. Therefore, you need to be able to see the whole picture and balance the unit's needs with the department's needs.

Qualifications

We are looking for you who have a relevant university degree within the natural science environmental field. You have experience of working as a manager or in another leading function, preferably in a politically governed organization. You have experience of development and/or change work with a focus on business processes and organization, and you have strategic knowledge and experience within the environmental field. Work experience within environmental monitoring and urban development is meritorious.

Your personal competencies are crucial for succeeding in the role of Unit Manager, and therefore we see that you can effectively identify and analyze the core of a problem and suggest possible solutions. In your daily work, you identify opportunities for change and create situations where new ideas and proposals can be developed.

  • Openness is a prerequisite for succeeding in the role, and therefore we see that you have the ability to listen to other people in order to understand their needs. You work for cohesion in the work group and see failures as something to learn from and create space for dialogue.
  • You are motivated by clearly defined goals and have the ability to convert these into concrete action. With a focus on the goal, you can reprioritize work in the event of changed conditions or needs. You follow up and report results and goal achievement. You can add enthusiasm and energy through persuasive arguments that encourage good performance, team spirit, and increased motivation. You stand by decisions made and can convey uncomfortable messages when necessary.

    Selection will take place continuously, so we want your application as soon as possible, but no later than August 2nd. We will conduct the first round of interviews during week 33. If you are called for an interview, we would like you to be able to show a copy of your educational certificate and a certificate confirming your previous employment before the interview.

    We apply the City of Gothenburg's leadership criteria in the assessment of applicants. Final candidates will undergo a full-day test at the City of Gothenburg's Assessment Center.
