At the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology at the Sahlgrenska Academy, extensive research and teaching are conducted across broad knowledge areas – from molecule to human. The department consists of five sections: pharmacology, physiology, health and rehabilitation, clinical neuroscience, and psychiatry and neurochemistry.
The Department of Neuroscience and Physiology is now seeking a Research Assistant, placed within the Section of Physiology.
Job Responsibilities
The employee will work on developing new mouse models for diabetes and functionally characterizing these models. The work includes experimental design, implementation, and analysis of studies, as well as documentation and reporting of results.
Work with animal models must be carried out in accordance with current guidelines from the Swedish Board of Agriculture and in strict compliance with the 3R principles (Replace, Reduce, Refine), with a clear focus on ethical and respectful treatment of the experimental animals. This constitutes a central and very important part of the employment.
Qualifications
Requirements
- Master’s degree in molecular biology or another research field relevant to the position.
- Completed and approved education in laboratory animal science according to current regulations.
- Documented experience working with experimental mouse models, including surgical procedures and xenograft models, as well as both development and functional characterization of these models, including (but not limited to) genotyping, anesthesia, euthanasia, and organ harvesting. The work must have been performed in accordance with ethical rules and guidelines established by the Swedish Board of Agriculture, applying the 3R principles and showing great respect for the experimental animals.
- Thorough knowledge and practical experience working with human biological material.
- Practical experience with viral packaging, titration, and transduction.
- Excellent written and spoken English skills.
Desirable Qualifications
- Previous experience working with 3D cell cultures such as spheroids.
- Experience with advanced imaging techniques such as fluorescence and confocal microscopy, as well as image analysis.
- Experience with CRISPR-based gene editing in cell lines is desirable.
- Experience with techniques such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), immunohistochemistry, and/or immunofluorescence, as well as cell culture, is also desirable.
- Experience with experimental methods, including but not limited to hormone secretion assays, immunoassays, radioactive isotopes, and related physiological measurements.
- Experience participating in research collaborations, both nationally and internationally.
- Good organizational skills, including the ability to manage complex experimental workflows and maintain structured documentation.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary research environments as well as international environments where English is the working language is considered desirable.

Employment
This is a fixed-term employment for 3 months, 50% of full-time, with placement indefinitely at the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology. Start date: ASAP or as agreed.
