Regional Laboratory Medicine belongs to Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Area 4, and has a clear coordination mandate for the entire Region of Västra Götaland. The organization consists of the laboratory medicine activities at Södra Älvsborg Hospital, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Hospitals in the West, and NU Hospital Group.

Who are we?

Clinical Immunology and Transfusion Medicine (KITM) is organized into 6 units in the Region of Västra Götaland. The Stem Cell and Component Laboratory unit has approximately 20 employees and is responsible, among other things, for the preparation of blood components from donor blood, the preparation of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation, and the retrieval of tissues for transplantation. We also manufacture two proprietary ATMP medicines and participate in various ATMP studies.

As one of our employees is going on parental leave, you will be placed at the Stem Cell Laboratory/National Cord Blood Bank section, where we work in close collaboration with the Hematology Clinic and the Childhood Cancer Center at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The activity is approved as a tissue establishment and has the mandate to process hematopoietic stem cells prior to stem cell transplantation as well as the preparation of various ATMP treatments. Our operations also include the National Cord Blood Bank, which holds a unique inventory of stem cells that can be transplanted to severely ill patients.

The entire activity is accredited by the international accreditation bodies JACIE and FACT.

What will you work with?

We are a small specialized lab with great commitment, joy in work, and specialist competence, where you are offered good development opportunities.

Here, you will work with processing stem cells from patients, donors, and cord blood. The processes take place in the laboratory's cleanroom and involve both automated methods and manual handling of stem cells. Duties include, among other things, the processing and freezing of stem cells, as well as thawing them for the patient. You will also participate in the harvesting of stem cells from bone marrow during surgery. We are responsible for the National Cord Blood Bank, where we process, freeze, and distribute cord blood donated in connection with births at Östra Hospital, and we also manufacture eye drops for patients with various eye conditions.

The activity also offers various T-cell therapies to severely ill patients and participates in numerous studies with advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMP). This part of the activity is currently developing rapidly and will grow further in the future.

Quality assurance is a large and important part of the work, which places high demands on documentation and traceability. Projects, method development, and supervision of students are also included in our varied and stimulating tasks.
