Job Description

The Division of Material and Structural Mechanics at KTH is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to develop advanced neutron imaging methods and apply them to problems in experimental solid mechanics and materials science. The position focuses on wavelength-resolved (time-of-flight) neutron imaging, enabling quantitative analysis of phase fractions, strain, and microstructural evolution in materials under load. The research will combine mechanical testing under in-situ conditions with neutron imaging at large-scale research facilities such as the European Spallation Source (ESS) and other international facilities, with a particular focus on hydrogen embrittlement and phase transformations in metallic materials. The work involves both experimental design and execution, as well as the development of robust workflows for data analysis, with the goal of extracting physically meaningful information from complex imaging data.

The position is part of a larger research initiative comprising three coordinated research tracks, senior researchers/faculty, and two additional postdoctoral researchers, combining experimental neutron imaging, tomography, simulation, and data analysis. The project is closely linked to ESS (the ODIN beamline) and offers opportunities for collaboration with researchers at KTH, ESS, and other international neutron facilities and research groups. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to both central research questions and joint demonstration studies where neutron imaging is applied to problems in materials mechanics and materials science. The position provides broad experimental experience as well as excellent opportunities for scientific publications and international networking.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A completed PhD degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Documented experience in experimental mechanics/solid mechanics and/or neutron/X-ray-based methods.
  • Experience in scientific data analysis and programming.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and contribute to the planning and execution of experimental research.
  • Good collaboration and communication skills, as the work will be carried out in close cooperation with researchers at KTH, ESS, international research facilities, and other project partners in Sweden.
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with a particular focus on gender equality.

Personal Qualities

Collaborative spirit, initiative-taking ability, and the capacity to work independently in an interdisciplinary research environment.

Merits

  • At the final application deadline, no more than three years have passed since the PhD degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD was awarded.
  • Experience in mechanical testing and/or materials characterization.
  • Experience with neutron, synchrotron, or other large-scale experimental research facilities.
  • Experience with or knowledge of in-situ experiments, phase transformations, hydrogen-related materials research, or advanced imaging methods.
  • Experience in quantitative analysis of imaging or diffraction data.
  • Knowledge in scientific computing, modeling, or methods relevant to data analysis.
  • It is an advantage if the applicant has documented ability to work in interdisciplinary and international research environments.
  • We welcome applicants who are motivated to contribute to both focused research questions and joint demonstration studies together with external research groups.

We will place great emphasis on personal qualities.
